Every time this topic comes up, I wish there was an easy way to see if the people whining about getting kudos instead of comments now were the same people whining about getting "great fic" style comments a few years ago, and are the same people who have always whined if the writer of a fic they comment on doesn't reply.

I don't think the overlap would be perfect, but I am willing to bet it would be fairly significant.

As you said, the overlap isn't perfect, so perhaps this is silly to say:

A lot of the reason I like comments is because I can then tell people thank you. If they give something more than "great fic" I like to engage them in a conversation about whatever their comment was. If it's great fic, I go "^_^v" or "XD" and leave it at that.

I do consider "great fic" to be greater than kudos in terms of strength. Perhaps I am underestimating the power of thought readers put behind kudos, though...

I'm one of the people who is "whining" (take out the H and it's more accurate - I love my Riesling!), but for what it's worth, I've never ever complained about the length of any comment. Not even a few years ago, when comments were a lot more common.

And no, I don't complain if an author doesn't respond when I leave a comment. It's like being pissed off if I say "thank you" and the other person fails to say "you're welcome". A sincere thank-you shouldn't be conditional on a response.

Which is great, but a lot of authors do whine about the ~quality of the comments they get, which is why I don't leave them any more.

Well, I guess an overlap would mean that readers are becoming more and more entitled and lazy so authors keep lowering their expectations.
