You'd get maybe 30 more, maybe. I don't comment very much on fic, unless it's very, very good or something really confuses/bothers me. But I also don't give a kudos unless I think a fic warrants it (it isn't an "I read this" button to me, it is an "I like this fic more than most of the fic I've read, kudos" button).

...There isn't a 150 or 200 comments ceiling. It's certainly possible that OP could have gotten that many reviews under different circumstances.

I don't think there is a ceiling or anything. I just don't think that all the people who gave a kudos would comment if the kudos button wasn't there. I can't say for sure, of course, but I do believe that a fairly significant portion wouldn't do anything. And I feel like the OP maybe thinks that if the kudos system didn't exist, a lot more of the people who gave a kudos would comment than actually would.

Ah! That makes more sense! (And for what it's worth, I agree with you that most of the kudos-leavers probably wouldn't have left reviews.)

But see, this is why, in the days before tumblr, it was so wonderful to post fics to places like LJ. Because the people who no longer bother to comment actually DID COMMENT.

(it isn't an "I read this" button to me, it is an "I like this fic more than most of the fic I've read, kudos" button).

And this is why kudos carry very little weight for me. You mean it as a strong compliment, but another kudos-er will mean it as something completely different.

Short comments may not say much, but at least you get a flavor for what was intended.

Because the people who no longer bother to comment actually DID COMMENT.

There is absolutely no way to know this. It could be that the people who would never commented on LJ are the ones now leaving Kudos.

Really? Knowing that it means different things to different people gives it little weight? That just seems kind of pessimistic. I would think the fact that at least one person means it as a strong compliment would make it a tad more meaningful.

Eh, not necessarily. One person's "I loved this!" could mean "This was the best fic I've read all year," while another's "I loved this!" could mean "This was a reasonably fun fic, but I don't want to make the author feel bad, so I'll be more enthusiastic than I think the story really merits."

I hadn't thought of this, but you make a good point. It's one reason why I try to avoid uding the word "love" when leaving comments. I try to be more specific (even though my efforts usually result in using the word "enjoy" a lot).
