you really need to explain to me why you'd want to write for something you don't even enjoy?

OP

I don't usually read or write fic for things I'm into, because I already got what I wanted from canon. MLP creates a setting that could be used for many, many things, then uses it for one specific thing. It apparently does it well for its target demographic, so it's not like it's wasted or anything, but I enjoy seeing the things the fans do with it that the canon wouldn't and shouldn't touch.

(I'm a bit surprised that this picked up so much hostility, but I guess I shouldn't be--people are probably picturing that AO3 secret from yesterday about fics that don't even try to respect canon. If I think my fics are going to turn out canon-contrary, I'll stop writing and not post any part of them. Same deal if either of the two fans I'm having read them deems them too canon-contrary to salvage.)

It sounds like you should just write your own original fic, OP. LIke, you can start off by basing it in a world like MLP:FIS, then make it your own.

I don't know why you're surprised about the hostility though - first, you basically insulted all the older teen/adult fans of MLP:FIS who are regulars here by saying that you found one of their favourite shows so infantile as to be unwatchable. And then you followed it up with the implication you were going to write fic anyway despite not getting through the canon. Anyone who has been in fandom for a reasonable amount of time would know is a hot button topic for wank and anger, because 1. people usually do it because they want popularity and just latch onto a big fandom to get it, and 2. it usually produces bad, or at least irritatingly canon-inaccurate fic.

Fandom: you are doing it wrong.
