You were expecting a show for young girls to not be kiddy?

This is the world we're leaving for the next generation, guys. We're filling it with people like the OP.

OP

For the amount of praise grownups were giving it, I was expecting something like Darkwing Duck, or at least Scooby-Doo.

Well to be fair, I sort of get what OP is saying. There are shows that aimed at school aged kids and than there are the shows aimed for the preschool set. And even the preschool set has it's divisions. A show for 2-4 set is different then one for the 3-5 set. This is because a 2 yr. old is very different than a 5 yr. old.

That said, there are well written kiddie shows and there are poorly written kiddie shows. The well written ones tend to be ones that are written with at least an ear for the grown ups in the room.

A lot times, shows/movies for even very little kids often have things tossed in for the adults watching with their children that kids would never be expected to understand. It's not unreasonable to hope for a kiddy show to have some aspects for grown-ups. Take something like Powerpuff Girls, on the surface, definitely aimed at little girls, dig a little deeper, and the whole family can be entertained.

Dude, it's a kids' show. Not a family movie like Frozen.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, that's my point. It's a show for very young children. I don't have anything against that, but I'm not a very young child.

I think what gets to me is how limited the vocabulary and sentence structures are by the target audience. If you read fic, even stuff that's praised for being in-character, the ponies don't talk like they do on the show, they talk in ways that represent their personality and experiences. On the show, they all sound very similar despite wildly different backgrounds, and I personally can't suspend my disbelief for that. If you can, more power to you.

I've never really been sure of the difference between "family show" and "kids' show", but most things aimed at little kids are boring to most adults.
souljelly: (Default)

[personal profile] souljelly 2014-05-25 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
As those above have said, it is very much geared towards kids. From what I can tell/what I've seen, it doesn't have much of a parental bonus content, though I could be wrong?

Uh anyhow, I've tried writing for a fandom where I didn't know much about the canon and in the end it proved like too much hard work and I was always concerned that I'd miss some vital canon tidbit that would ruin the suspension of belief for people reading. But hey, maybe you'll have better luck than me OP.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
you really need to explain to me why you'd want to write for something you don't even enjoy?

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't usually read or write fic for things I'm into, because I already got what I wanted from canon. MLP creates a setting that could be used for many, many things, then uses it for one specific thing. It apparently does it well for its target demographic, so it's not like it's wasted or anything, but I enjoy seeing the things the fans do with it that the canon wouldn't and shouldn't touch.

(I'm a bit surprised that this picked up so much hostility, but I guess I shouldn't be--people are probably picturing that AO3 secret from yesterday about fics that don't even try to respect canon. If I think my fics are going to turn out canon-contrary, I'll stop writing and not post any part of them. Same deal if either of the two fans I'm having read them deems them too canon-contrary to salvage.)

That's an easy question: NO. If you don't watch the show, what the hell are you doing writing about characters and a story you are not familiar with?
diet_poison: (Default)

[personal profile] diet_poison 2014-05-25 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so confused as to why you got into the fandom in the first place...

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
This might be identifying, since I've given the same explanation un-anon, but I've never once seen an anon identified from anything they thought would identify them. (I guess most of us aren't as noticeable as we think we are.) Basically, I found an editor for my original fiction, and she had me edit her ponyfic in return. That ponyfic was so incredibly good that I decided to read other ponyfics, and those were incredibly good too, so I read more . . . There were just so many different styles and genres, all amazing. Sure, there's plenty of rubbish as well, but every fandom has trash, and the treasure's more than worth it.

I'm sorry I didn't know nice stories and life lessons were kiddy. Not enough browns and grim dark for your adult self?

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh dear God, I finally figured out why I'm getting such hostile responses.

No, I don't read or like grimdark, and no, I'm not in any way angry or bitter that the show is not grimdark. And even if I did like that rubbish, the show is what it is, and I'm not the target audience. I'm more into the utopian style of old-school Star Trek, which MLP is probably the biggest representative of now that Star Trek has stopped doing that, and I love that so much of the fanfic maintains the lighthearted idealism of the show.

why is no one asking the important question

where did you find this nice side of the fandom

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-05-26 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
http://www.equestriadaily.com/ is not, in and of itself, the nice side of the fandom, but it tends to link the nice side of the fandom. If you follow a link to a fanfic from EQD, there's at least a 75% chance you'll wind up somewhere that isn't too flamey. The odds on Youtube videos are a bit lower, but still decent, and the odds on drawings seem to be even higher.

If you can fake knowledge well enough, then sure. I can't imagine most of the fic is massively in character given how limited a show for young kids must be in terms of character in the first place.

damn, didn't think this secret would inspire so much criticism.

I don't think anybody will notice, OP. if the show is simpleer than most and the fanon so elaborate, fans who're involved in the adult/teenager fandom won't notice? hell, people are already giving more head space to fanon than to canon, they're often two different kind of animals. maybe watch some episodes to truely soak in the kiddie spirit to not feel entitled to the show and appreciate what it does.

reminds me of this youtube video of an adult brony complaining about a my little pony colouring book. look into that abyss and don't become it 8-0

Can I really contribute to a fandom where I'm not into the canon?

Well, first you'll have to ask yourself if you'll enjoy writing it. If yes, you're already halfway there. Then if people like your fic, it's a win-win situation.

(Maybe not mention you're not into the canon though...)

[personal profile] bookplayer 2014-05-26 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
A couple things:

First, I'm glad you're enjoying the fanfic side of MLP fandom! You hear so much negative about bronies, but over on FiMfiction I've rarely seen the kind of behavior that people complain about.

Second, I can't really recommend writing without knowing the canon-- at least enough to have the characters and their voices down. Somewhere else here you talked about finding their vocabulary similar, which is a major tip off that you're going to have trouble writing them. If there's one thing that will pull me out of a fic it's not having the voices down.

That being said, there are a few things you could try. I know that when my husband started watching, it took him about six episodes to really get into it (he lost a bet.) But by the time he'd watched the first six, he was hooked. I don't know how much you tried, but maybe give it a few more episodes? You could try putting it on in the background while you do something else.

Another thing you could try is that if there's one character or aspect you want to write about, someone familiar with the show could give you a limited list of episodes (maybe three or four) to make sure you've got that character down. That would probably give you enough characterization to make sure the center of your fic is solid, and you would hopefully pick up enough of the other characters to write them well enough.

If you need any help, feel free to PM me on FiMfiction (same username), or if you don't want to unanon, you could look around the Groups there and find someplace appropriate to ask. There are tons of friendly, helpful people on that site.

Don't worry, OP. I read the (currently 54) comments, and I understand what you mean about everything (the sentence structure, the plot lines, all that). I saw people talking about the show and about re-watching every episode in one sitting, so I was, as TBFP would say "over-hyped", but found the actual show to be not all that engaging.

Still, there were some episodes where a character would say something shockingly profound (Pinkie Pie's comment about Gilda) and an episode or two that I'm not ashamed to admit I took a few lessons from.

If you want to try getting through a few episodes, I suggest looking through Wikipedia's episode descriptions to see if any sound moderately interesting (I linked to the S1 descriptions; you can find the rest at the end of the page). You can find them all on youtube. Good luck to you and don't let the anon-cowards get you down. Everyone's brave enough to name-call when they don't have to imagine that there's an actual human with emotions and feelings behind the screen.

(P.S. I recommend the episode "The Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000" because of the catchy song which is a sort of homage to "Ya Got Trouble" from The Music Man)
