Hey now, some of us in Hannibal fandom are perfectly honest about what we're in it for. I wish the people trying to make it into a great SJ show* would go find another show where the two most important (and least likely to die) characters aren't white and male. It's annoying how whenever something bad happens to a side character and the show is more interested in how that relates to Hannibal and/or Will they start complaining about it as if they have no idea how main characters in fiction work.

*I appreciate Hannibal's attempts to mitigate some of the problematic elements that show up in fiction in regards to women, but as far as I'm concerned that just means they're trying to make it not misogynistic, not turning it into an actively feminist show. I don't buy you can have an actively feminist show when the main and unkillable characters are male. Maybe when Schlarice Starling shows up that will change, but currently it's still a white/male focused show (that I adore).

Yeah, I don't think Hannibal has ever intended to be an actively feminist show, but a lot of third-party promotional material did kind of frame it that way? The significant female representation and Fuller's quote about not wanting to use rape as a cheap plot device are often spun into "Hannibal is the most feminist show on TV" type articles, at least from what I've seen. Anyone coming in with that in their mind is going to expect a lot more than they get, which is a show focused on the relationship between two men. Don't get me wrong, I love Hannibal (see username) and I think it does have a lot of elements that can be considered feminist, but yeah, this is really not the show a lot of people expect it to be.

I also dislike how the women are often put on these pedestals of ULTIMATE UNDYING PERFECTION while the men are allowed to be flawed and make poor choices and still be "precious babies". Dumbfuckery is unisex. Let our ladies fuck up and still be loveable. :I

Yeah, I know some of the people pushing it on others are framing it that way (which boggles the mind) but it's really clear when you actually watch it that it's primarily about Will and Hannibal with everyone else being secondary to what's going on with them. So it's not entirely their fault (although it is the fault of people promoting it that way) but I just want them to clue in faster?

YES to your second point. I was so pissed at some of the complaints about the Alana storyline. At least a couple said it was anti-feminist because Alana was set up as the character who was always correct in the first season. Which is bullshit, but also makes me want to headdesk because I can't think of much MORE anti-feminist than a female character who is never allowed to make serious mistakes.

Pretty much, yeah. A lot of people get mad that the women are fodder for manpain/Will's character development, particularly in the Takiawase-Mukozuke storyline (staying nondescript for spoilers), which would be a completely valid complaint if the show wasn't centered entirely around him. Will is the main character. Everything that happens on the show is supposed to fuel his development, including the death/injury/trauma of men. (Like, you know, almost all of the murderers and murder victims that get into his head.)

If Alana Bloom had stayed Alan Bloom, if Zeller or Price had taken Beverly's role, they would have been used to further Will's development just like they were in the real show. But this way we get awesome, complex ladies. :D

Oh godddddd. Alana has taken so much shit this season from fans on both sides. You've got people saying "omgggg that bitch is ruining muh murder husbands!1!11!!! :'(" and, on the other side, "WOMEN CAN NEVER BE MANIPULATED EVER NOT EVEN BY THE MAN WHO IS MANIPULATING LITERALLY EVERYBODY ELSE ON THE SHOW". Shut up, you're both wrong. I was just happy that she retained her agency and got some fine cannibal dick in the process awwwwwyeah baby.
