New anime - Information required

[personal profile] the_missing_y 2014-05-26 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
So I have come across an anime called "Fairy Tale" which looks kinda cool (For those who've not heard of it a magic based world with wizards and wizard guilds and stuff)

Here's my problem I need some answers on, though. It smells an awful lot like Bleach and Naruto. You know that smell of an anime that draaaaags on, where a 3 page fight scene takes 3 episodes to play out, where you will get a flash back at the end of a fight to something that happened at the start.
I have little patience for another anime that has more posturing than action.

So anyone know what I'll be getting into here? How's the pacing, is what I'm asking. Let's do this 1-10. 1 being Naruto 10 being Black Lagoon.

quite possibly.

It is a shounen longrunner. Nowhere near as long as Bleach or Naruto. Not yet anyway.

I'm not so worried about how long it's been running for, I'm more worried about the pacing. Bleach and Naruto has dreadful pacing.

I've only watched the first episode, but as far as I know the characters remain fairly static and it repeats in shounen-jump-way. It's got a decent following, though, so it's probably not horrifically awful.

If you're interested in something long running in the Naruto/Bleach vein, I'd recommend Hunter x Hunter instead.

Actually, I'm looking for the opposite. A relatively long running show that doesn't drag like bleach and naruto.

The 2011 Hunter x Hunter anime is long (there's 130 episodes right now) but doesn't drag because it had a lot of material to adapt.

In the same vein, there's Jojo's Bizarre Adventure 2012 adaptation which also has the advantage of adapting a manga cut into "parts", each one telling a new story in the same universe. So even if you get burnt out with it, you'll still be able to get a decent ending by watching the last episode of a part.
Right now there's a first season of 26 episodes that you can watch on Crunchyroll and another which is ongoing and will probably have something like 48 episodes.

Other than that I can think of Monster, Soul Eater, both of Fullmetal Alchemist adaptations and Revolutionary Girl Utena as relatively long anime series that don't drag forever.

I've never watched Fairy Tail so I don't know if it drags or not, sorry.

I mean, it's shounen. The most popular ones tend to be that way, and Fairy Tail is definitely popular. Personally I thought the pacing was fine, but it's not exactly moving at the speed of light.

If you have the time, try sitting through one or two arcs and see how you like it? The first season is 48 episodes, but you could probably watch the first 10 or 25 and see how you like it.

It follows a pretty standard shounen formula, but the pacing is definitely better than either Naruto or Bleach (at least for a little over the first 100 eps or so, haven't watched much further than that).

Annoying flashbacks I don't really remember, there were definitely some, but I don't think there were that many.

I was also reluctant to get into it for that reason but I've watched all the episodes to date and although it does get a little fight-heavy at times it never gets too far from characterization and plot. I'd give it about a 7 in terms of your 1-10 scale. It's actually one of the best shows I've seen in quite some time.

Do you like The Power of Friendship? Because if you don't, all the excellent pacing in the world won't save Fairy Tail for you.
