Rating systems confuse me so much, ugh. That's probably what I spend the most time on when upload fic on AO3; trying to google around and figure out which rating is most appropriate.

I do the same damn thing. I don't even think the word "everyone", I just think "E = generic and safe" lol

Exactly. (Which sometimes makes browsing for fic very confusing. I see 'E', think it's gen and if I don't look at the tags am struck by surprise porn. Which I don't typically mind, but...still.)

I usually assume M = mature = explicit. Are they different ratings on Ao3? Or is M not a rating? I don't really remember...

G = General Audiences
T = Teen
M = Mature
E = Explicit

I do this too. I always think U means 'Unclassifiable' as well which doesn't help.

I also have this problem. I clicked on a fic the other day because I was thinking "everyone" and then I was like... wait! They're having sex in an E-rated fic?

I have the opposite problem. AO3's ratings are also color-coded, so they don't confuse me. But seeing a black & white E on a very cutesy looking game box will throw me off.

I was expecting to find a whole pile of comments in this thread saying how this is more a problem with your attitude to sex (hee hee hee, sex!) than one with the rating system.

But it seems I'm in the minority and everyone else has this problem too.

I really don't get what the problem is? Sex is not 'for everyone', there are people who are too young or not into it or what have you, and the idea of a 'for everyone' label on sexy fics (which can often be pretty kinky or otherwise appeal to a niche market) which clearly aren't 'for everyone' is a funny bit of dissonance. Like, I am all for critically analysing attitudes and media, but this is really not indicative of anything except the fact that a video game rating system is funny when applied to sex.

Not to mention that the 'explicit' rating also encompasses stuff like gore and torture. So, really, this tells me more about your defensiveness about sex than anything to do with OP's attitude.

I have a similar problem; whenever I get to the page where it warns about explicit content and asks if I want to proceed, I always think 'proceed' in Michelle Pfeiffer's voice from that one line in "The Legend of Miss Baltimore Crabs" and it ruins even the most serious darkity-dark-dark angst-and-gore-and-torture-and-really-kinky-sex.
