I'm so confused. Did you mom make them before you started liking them? Have you only really liked them for five years? Why do they remind you of home and not fandom?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-27 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think that's such a bad thing. It lead you to try something new. Fandom leads people to travel the world, to study new things, to taste new foods-- those are all GOOD things. Of all the bad things fandom can do to your life, making you eat something you'd not have tried otherwise is definitely not one of them.

I've never had kipper in my life, but I learned about them through a combination of the Goon Show and Red Dwarf.

"Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast!"
"What a guy!"

Fandom does funny things to you, oh yes.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-28 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Same.

I learned about them from Supertramp.

Can we have kippers for breakfast,
Mummy dear, Mummy dear?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-28 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Me too, that's the only place I've ever heard of them.

Then you REALLY need to see the episode of Fawlty Towers with the dead man and the kippers. XD

But Supertramp is always a valid reason for knowing something. :3

The Ace Rimmer AU character arc/episodes are among my very favorites in Red Dwarf. I squeed a little just reading this comment.

And they are the only reason I know what kippers are, too.

Yay!

I came into this thread just to see if someone had referenced that line.

Fandom has made me try a lot of different things; it's not a terrible thing.

Today I finally learned what kippers actually are

Just how do you deal with all the damn bones in the kippers? I swear there is more bone than fish at times, spitting them out after every bite.

I feel I am commenting on the wrong part of this secret.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-28 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Depends how they're cooked. The tinned variety are cooked under high pressure, so the bones basically dissolve anyway (or they should) and you can eat them whole.

If you fry them fresh over really high heat, the smallest bones become chewy-ish, and the big ones are easily enough dealt with by dragging your teeth from the tail to the front, vacuuming the meat off the bones as you go, leaving the (mostly) intact skeleton behind. This does involve very bad table manners, but that's the trade-off.

....I eat a lot of fish, okay.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-28 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
I assumed they were a British term for sausages, not some kind of fish. They seem a lot less appealing now. (I don't like fish. It tastes, well, fishy.)

I totally thought this was going to be a Red Dwarf secret. Ah well.

But it's a good thing that fandom is expanding your horizons!

That looks super tasty and I want to try it. Mmm.

I associate kippers with The Stand - in one of the more humorous scenes this guy is trying to make his exit from the apartment of a woman he just slept with while she's in the middle of making kippers and bacon, and I always remembered that because I couldn't wrap my head around eating fish for breakfast, but I guess that's a common thing.

A fic I once read made me finally decide I don't like porridge with sugar and milk, but instead with savoury add-ins.

I've never tried kippers though.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-28 11:26 am (UTC)(link)
i wanna read the fic, and what are kippers? like sardines?
tephra: Sanji from One Piece, Cooking (Cooking Sanji)

[personal profile] tephra 2014-05-30 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
Smoked herring. In the US at least they are usually in flat pull top tins. They do have a strong smell similar to sardines so I wouldn't recommend trying them before a big date or a job interview.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-28 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, I always used to think they were hash browns because I couldn't imagine that fish was actually a breakfast food. And OP, they're actually mentioned in the HP books as well. And it's really not weird that you learnt about them from fandom.
