So I saw Captain America 2 yesterday

[personal profile] ibbity 2014-05-27 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
And I found that it was spectacularly different from what fandom had led me to expect.

Don't get me wrong, it was a good movie, but I was led to believe that I was going to watch "The Angsty UST-Filled Reunion Of Bucky And Steve With Occasional Appearances From Sam And Natasha," whereas what I actually got was "Steve And Natasha's Excellent Adventure With Sam, And Bucky Also Shows Up A Few Times Although We Don't Realize It's Him For Like The First 2/3 Of The Movie." I didn't see any more shippiness with the two of them than I did in CA 1, which is to say, not a whole heck of a lot of shippiness. (I didn't see any real shippiness with Steve and Sam, either, although for some reason I came out of it shipping Natasha with both Sam AND Maria.)

I mean, I can see the appeal for people who go into things looking for slashability/shippability, but I'm really not sure what movie exactly the people who were all like "IT'S CLEAR THEY WANTED US TO SHIP THIS AND PROBABLY SHIP IT THEMSELVES" were watching. Or what movie the people were watching who seem to recall it as mainly consisting of Steve interacting with Sam and/or Bucky.

Also, even though all of my fandom outlets have been chattering nonstop about this movie ever since it came out, I went into it completely unaware of the actual plot, which I guess was good because I wasn't spoiled for that part at least but c'mon people.

I do most sincerely agree, however, with those folks who were all up in arms about Natasha's terribly terribly impractical hairstyle. What were they thinking with that?

Edit: The last 15 minutes or so of the movie were what I expected the entire thing to be like, basically. I don't know if they're planning to finish the Bucky storyline in Cap 3 or Avengers 2, but I am looking FORWARD to the delicious delicious angst and emotion and manly tears that I'm sure are in store for us. GIVE IT ALL TO ME YES.

I much prefer that it's Steve and Natasha's Excellent Adventure with Sam; that's what makes me love the movie. :)

Oh, I liked that part too. I really enjoyed that they actually gave a female character (esp. one as already awesome as Natasha) so much development and importance in a role that didn't feature her being romantically linked to anyone except as a fakeout for like 2 minutes. And how she and Steve have a genuine friendship where they legit regard each other on an equal footing and seriously care about each other platonically and it's never implied that they should be dating and they have a great working partnership too and SO MUCH LOVE.

Yeah, I'm with you in the Non-Vocal Minority seating over here re: shippyness. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy the movie (and the way Bucky's consciousness briefly emerged and then was shoved down again def choked me up; I saw it as a parallel to Peggy's moment of clarity) but ... No "E" fics from me.

Yeah, I came out shipping neither the prevalent pairing nor the pairing that the people you know are probably actually shipping Steve/Bucky too are mad that no one is shipping instead of Steve/Bucky because IT MUST BE ONLY RACISM (except the part where S/B already has a movie's worth of relationship built up and already had shippers and Sam just met Steve in this movie for the first time...) Like I said I came out shipping Natasha with both Sam and Maria although I'm not quite sure how, lol. But that wasn't what I mainly took away from the movie. It seemed way more like a buddy flick with S & N, with a side plot about B's reappearance to give a good hook for the next movie.

Yeah, and I'm actually so completely fine with seeing it as a good buddy movie.

(fwiw I am not in the MCU fandom at all, but I do know whereof you speak. :p)

It's an AWESOME buddy movie. People who view it as just a vehicle for shipping are missing out, lol.

ugh, i know exactly what you mean. when i stepped out of the theater i found myself wondering why the movie was called the winter soldier, because he had like ten minutes of screentime, tops. literally every other named character was as important as him, if not more (ie fury, natasha, sam).
i went on the internet expecting steve/sam and squee over how awesome natasha and maria were, and when i saw how much steve/bucky fanwork there already was, i just sat there thinking "i don't understand". i really, really don't get it.

I think it was probably a case of pre-existing S/B shippers seeing an opportunity to get more love for their ship and running with it. I mean, Bucky IS pretty smokin' in this movie, so it's not like they would've had to work all that hard to get more people on board. But yeah, after actually seeing it I was greatly saddened that almost no one was talking about Natasha at all, except about her impractical hairstyle. She was still cool, guys! Also, those wing things that Sam was flying around with. DO WANT.

Oh yes, I was pretty puzzled by the end because I was led to believe it was a Winter Soldier movie but it was more of a Hydra/Shield movie with a Winter Soldier prequel tackled on. Heh, as a comics reader I should have been prepared, since comics covers and titles lie a lot xD

Re: So I saw Captain America 2 yesterday

The Winter Soldier is like Jaws. He's the title character, but he only pokes up out of the water to kill someone occasionally while everyone else is running around panicking before his big appearance at the end.

I'm gonna take the opportunity to go a bit OT because I also saw this movie recently and I have to say: remember that secret complaining about how much they said Hail Hydra in the movie? What the hell was up with that? They say it like 3 times o.O That's like nothing. They say it multiple times per page in comics, so after seeing the secret I spent the entire movie waiting for the explosion of Hail Hydras... And it never came.

I thought the secret was complaining about the meme, not the film.

That's not what the OP's replies sounded like. The OP was talking about how the Hail Hydras ruined Hydra's realism in the movie.

I was pretty happy and surprised with Natasha in it, but I do have to vent about her hair, sorry. They did do us the courtesy of showing it less straight after a shower but then it's back to unearthly straight and unmoving. Guess Sam had a straightening iron lying around just because, huh.

Re: So I saw Captain America 2 yesterday

(Anonymous) 2014-05-28 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe she had it "permanently" straightened. A girl in high school had that done and it basically looked and behaved like hers.

Isn't that sort of the way with all slash (that is non-canon, though)?

The angst and man-tears are totally what get this fandom going, I tell you.

And as for the people saying 'they totally want us to ship it" - well I can sort of see why. In the first film, they were somewhat physical with each other. In Winter Soldier, Steve repeatedly is uninterested in dating women Natasha suggests - and he's pretty much totally indifferent to her kissing him, up to the point she asks him if that was his first kiss since WWII. Bucky is really the only one that Steve seems to be unwaveringly, emotionally invested in - he loved the guy so much he'd rather let him kill him that to harm him.

see, I'm not saying they're in love in canon, obviously. It can just be an amazing friendship. I'm just saying: if you WANT to read subtext, then oh boy - there's a lot of it.

In The First Avenger, yes. But in Winter Soldier...not so much.

Sure, the scene with him at her bed in touching, but, it seems the romantic connection is gone: she had a husband, kids, a life. And from his end: he's still a young man while she could be his grandmother. While they do seem to care about each other, it seems to be more nostalgia than a rekindled romantic connection - on both ends.

Again, I'm not saying this is the way the makers wanted us to see it. I'm just saying, adding up these things you can make quite the subtext.

A romantic interest was specifically avoided for Steve in Winter Soldier - and it was avoided so vocally that it stands out.

SA

Sorry -- I expected you to read my mind.

What I meant was: his reluctance to date could be explained by the fact that five minutes ago (from his perspective) he was in love with a beautiful young woman, and now, suddenly, she's old, she's had an entire life, and she has Alzheimer's, and there's no future for them, but he hasn't quite got over his love for the old her...

I am very aware how little Bucky is in Winter Soldier (and will always find it ironic considering the film is named after him) and wish there had been more of him (maybe we'll get deleted scenes; I know he's supposed to be a big part of Cap 3 as well), but I like the film as is too. It was an excellent film; I don't think much could have been done to improve it. The cast was strong, they had a lot to work with (and even when they didn't have many scenes, they acted the hell out of them; not just talking about Sebastian though, Mackie as well) and the story was very good. The action was insane and all kinds of impressive and fun to watch. This was just a good movie.

That said, I ADORED Nat and Sam, and hell, Maria and Fury too, but yea, I'm a huge Bucky fan and I've been shipping Steve/Bucky since the first film so lots of the time I do gravitate towards talking about that. Shipping is in my blood. Can't help it.

As for fandom misleading you into thinking the entire film was about Steve/Bucky...sorry. I do wish there was more Sam and Nat stuff on tumblr (which is mainly where I've been hanging out, other than here), but I believe once the actual film is released there will be. Hopefully.

I want all the Bucky deleted scenes, hell I want all the special features in general(I also want a gag reel because we know that SebStan fell over multiple times and had his trousers fall down and dammit I need this, I also need ScarJo, Evans and Mackie being adorable together too).

I just want it on DvD already, why do I have to wait? God.

I know, I want like four hours of special features and a fifteen minutes gag reel and commentary with Stan and Mackie (this is probably not going to happen, but oh, do I want it. Preferably we would get Evans and Scarlett in on it too but I think that's just impossible, lol). I also hope there's an extra long feature about the fight scenes... I need this for reasons. They can interview Evans and Stan's stunt doubles. (Though I have already seen an interview with Evan's stunt double, but I want more. Of everything.)

This is the worst form of torture that could be inflicted upon us, I agree.

... What about Stan's pants falling down? WHAT? I also hope they show Scarlett and Stan filming that fight scene where she tries to strangle him. I remember reading about that and would love to see it in action, lol.)

Man Cap 2 is the Steve and Natasha show and I completely adored it for that, I loved watching them run around fighting bad-guys and generally being bro's, and honestly I was so happy to see a male+female pair that weren't romantically involved. It's rare in movies, especially actions films, and I really appreciated it for that. Also their friendship is a thing of beauty and I love how Cap 2 fleshed out Natasha some more(and now I need her to have her own film).

(I also need Sam in all the films because he was great and I want to see more of him.)

It's true, Bucky doesn't have much in the way of screen-time but I really enjoyed what we did get and I loved watching him being the Winter Solider and just kicking ass. I loved all the ass-kicking in this film ngl.

I didn't go in expecting to ship anything at all then I came out shipping Steve/Bucky like nobody's business. I did like the idea of Steve/Bucky in Cap 1 but I wouldn't say I fully shipped it, then in Cap 2 something about them pulled at my heartstrings in just the right way and I fell down the shipping rabbit-hole(and I'm still firmly entrenched, send help, and supplies).

Natasha's hairstyle actually bothered me less as the film went on and now I kind of like it, it should have been tied back tbh but I quite liked how perfectly straight it was and how it fell about her shoulders just so(and tbh it's nowhere near as bad as her IM2 hair, that was just silly).

I walked in waiting for the Bucky and I was pretty satisfied with the new plot point of "Bucky is the winter soldier you are Bucky!!" and Bucky being "who dat" along with the actual storyline of SHIELD collapsing.
The ending definitely sealed it for me, as now we'll be getting another movie that will resolve it.

On an unrelated note I thought the WS definitely had some good moments especially when he was in Pierce's house and Pierce took out the milk, I whispered to my friend "want some milk?" and right after that he says it and we almost cracked up.
