Food you've tried because of fandom

Secret 15's OP and I can't be the only ones, right?

A lot of Japanese food from when I was into anime. Never really cared for pocky, though.

I'm still dying to try some strawberry milk.

I don't think there are things I tried specifically because of canon, but there are things I can't eat anymore because of Hannibal. Like rabbit for instance.

I tried to make okonomiyaki once. I used way too much cabbage, which caused the kitchen to reek, and I accidentally put in about 10 times as much of the fish stock concentrate as I was supposed to. It was HORRIBLE.

I used to order strawberry shakes when I was getting a shake because my favorite character drank them. I tried making fried rice because of Kotetsu Kaburagi. Sesame seeds because Fox Mulder snacks on them. So, yep.

I started drinking tea more because of Uncle Iroh.

Yep, I'm jumping on board the Japanese food train, because of anime/video games. lol I ended up living in Japan for a few years, and even after the sparkles wore off, I still got intensely happy when I saw some food that reminded me of an anime, and got to eat it.

Additionally, because of my fantasy love, I've tried, and even cooked, a lot of "medieval" style foods. European medieval, that is.

Yes, quite a few I think, but off the top of my head:

Yogurt because of Michael West, which became one of my favorite snacks.

Various tea: Black because of Harry Potter, but I didn't like it, then later Green because of anime and I was only partial to it, then Herbal ones which I loved.

Scrambled eggs because of what a big deal was made of the omelet thing in Dusk Maiden of Amnesia. I hadn't had eggs in years and I knew it wasn't the same thing since the Japanese omelet is made differently, but tried them anyway. I did not like them.

Pecan pie because a character was portrayed as loving it in a fic (I forget which fandom). I absolutely hated it.

Miso Soup because of Naruto's love for miso ramen. I hated the instant stuff I could get in the tiny asian section at my grocery store, but the miso soup I later had at an actual Japanese restaurant was amazing.

A couple easily obtained Japanese snacks - pocky, those panda cookies with chocolate, strawberry or vanilla fillings, ect - because of anime in general.

I know there are more, but I can't think of them right now.

I tried a bunch of French pastries because...of anime. LOL You guys familiar with the manga Antique Bakery? It had beautiful pictures of French pastries and these long descriptions of them that had me salivating. Before that manga, I was vegan for 8 years, I kid you not, and I reverted to vegetarianism (other reasons, too, but it was a contributing factor).

No no it's okay, it's just sugar and flour mostly with some other stuff and some coloring.

nayrt

Huh, I didn't know. I learned something today! Also:

He describes the taste as far worse than the most bitter radicchio. Frankly, he says, the flavor is indescribably awful.

Now I almost want to try one too, to see how indescribable it is.

Funyuns because of Breaking Bad. I didn't first eat gyouza because of it but I started eating it a lot more frequently because of Ookiku Furikabutte (one scene where a character burns it). I started eating cans of tuna a lot more because of The Social Network.

I ordered osso bucco last time I went to a fancy Italian restaurant because of Hannibal. (Lamb rather than veal, so I'm reasonably sure it wasn't people.)

Lots of things, notably Japanese food. I can't say "this dish corresponds with this manga" or anything that specific, but I'm favorably disposed towards everything that doesn't have tons of preservatives/flavor enhancers or cost an arm and a leg.

My mom talked me out of trying chilidogs, way back circa Sonic the Hedgehog, because I was about 9/10ths vegetarian as a kid and probably would have gotten sick from meat + more meat + spices and chili.

Also, one of my very favorite fanfic writers is indirectly responsible for my drinking coffee. Her headcanon influenced my headcanon.

Yeah, mostly Japanese food when I was back in my weeaboo phase - not specifically-inspired ones, just Japanese stuff in general. Turns out I love teriyaki sauce on anything, nasu dengaku is delicious and actually made me like eggplant, edamame makes for a wonderful snack, agedashi tofu is nom and I need to work out how to make it without the bonito, miso soup is wonderful on cold days, those little coconut jellies are VEGAN JELLIES I CAN GET IN THE SUPERMARKET YES :D, and I need ALL THE MOCHI. Especially the red bean paste ones. Must go to the nearest Asian supermarket and get more, they didn't have any last time. (Got sesame seed instead - I liked the black sesame inside, didn't really like the sesame seeds on the OUTSIDE. Related, I had dango once - the one with the sweet soy sauce - and would very much like to try it again.)

Pocky I can take or leave. Mostly leave, at this point, since it usually has dairy in it...

But yeah, as a cuisine, I really like Japanese food, even if I'm no longer actually into most anime (Mushishi aside).

The Fifth Doctor inspired me to try celery.

Unfortunately I hated it, but hey, at least it was a new experience!

I already mentioned in the thread for secret 15 that I decided I didn't like porridge with sugar and milk after reading a fic with a character saying it tastes better with savoury additions (it was a FFIX fic).

I think I originally tried Pocky because I'd heard about it in fandom, though I think it was less fic and more general Pocky craze.

I also think the same thing happened with okonomiyaki - I occasionally read Ranma 1/2 fic, and at some point looked up okonomiyaki to get an idea of what it is. I was at a street market up in Caloundra when Mum and I stayed there for a weekend with my aunt and uncle (Mum's sister and her husband). I will say the okonomiyaki there was probably not the greatest quality, and had too much sauce on top, but the next time I was in the Brisbane CBD and had money for it, I bought okonomiyaki at a tepanyaki store in the Meyer Centre. Their cooking was better quality and I have bought it occasionally since, when I could afford a meal of $13+ and have the patience to wait for it to be cooked.

I don't think Fandom influenced me to try sushi though. I did that myself.

if we're counting drink as well as food, Macallan's whiskey because I heard it was Hugh Laurie's fave.
The man has good taste, it's the best whiskey I've ever had.

Old post no one will read but I just want to say it anyway:

Figure it out.
