I wonder

(Anonymous) 2014-05-28 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
if my pets actually hate me. I am their jailer. They just act nice because they think that someday I'll let them go if they butter me up enough.

Most pets don't survive on their own because they aren't bred to be wild. You're the reason they continue to live, have healthcare, shelter, and food.

Don't be like that. They love you. You're their caretaker and surrogate parent figure.

Are they affectionate? Like lick you, demand hugs and cuddles without prompting? If yes, they must like you.

If your pets were capable of that level of reasoning they wouldn't be pets.

That said, I know my cats are waiting for me to die so they can eat me. One of them tests me every morning.

Exactly!

Dog, cats, birds, lizards, hamsters? Different species have different signs of affection that they do, so I'm sure you can find a list and learn to read their behavior. I doubt they hate you. Even abusive owners don't usually have animals that hate them, sadly enough.

Unless you do have a lizard. Lizards hate everybody, and heaven help you if you don't place the crickets just so in their cage.

Lizards are awesome! I met a bearded dragon a few months ago who liked to climb on shoulders and eat waxworms off your palm.

I read that cats either think of their owners as surrogate mothers or big dumb non-hostile other cats.

My cats like to demand me to open doors for them.

I agree with the thought that most pets would not survive in the wild. The only exception I would make is cats, who can easily transition to feral.

But as long as you treat your pets well, they have a lot easier life with you (even cats) - regular food, veterinary treatment (even if they hate it when it happens), shelter from weather and predators (even cats need to guard against other predators - they're small animals so possible prey themselves).

Treat them well, be kind to them, and they are happy to live with you.
