I know about msscribe, but who's the person on the right?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-29 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, this'll be fun.

That's Andy Blake aka Jordan Wood aka Victoria Bitter aka Amy Player. He's a cult leader who's been active in fandoms foreeeeever and became internet famous when he claimed to be channeling Frodo and also Elijah Wood. He's currently in Supernatural fandom and claims that he's past all that, but there are a whole bunch of tumblrs popping up to document all the ways he hasn't changed:

http://1purp0se.tumblr.com/
http://protectyourfanmily.tumblr.com/

Also http://kumquatwriter.tumblr.com/, which is run by his ex-girlfriend/survivor of his cult.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-29 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I recommend reading kumquatwriter's stuff about Andy since it gives a very clear picture of how he operates and...well. It's a good [if scary], well written and does a lot to explain the reactions people have to what he does.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-30 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
....WAT did I just read? I vaguely recall the thanfiction wank from FW, but that...hooooooo boy, that's really down the rabbit hole, isn't it??

Seconded. Not only is she clear and straightforward, but I like the way her blog is written. (Also, she just kinda seems like a cool gal.)

Besides, reading a firsthand experience of something like this drives the point home way more than just an awareness blog (not that there's anything wrong with awareness blogs!). It's chilling.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-30 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I've read about him on one nigh about two years ago and he terrifies me still. I can clearly see while many people with issues get manipulated by him, hell even the base of the cult mechanism didn't sound implausible to me as I think the theory of multiply universes is sound (it escalates with him of course, but in levels ... which can be reasoned with as they happen and while on the outside you can see it's bullshite ... on the inside you probably don't). Worst thing is that he's still at it and his posts about "realising how toxic he was" are still total lies (sprinkled between the lines).

Also, he's still a scammer. Apparently he conned people in some military camp thingy recently? As in took registration money and never organised it?

I'm just glad that his fanfics are not something I read as I don't ship Destiel, never liked Tolkien and his magnus opus HP fic sounds pretenious.

Seconding those links, and adding:

http://kqcrazytrain.wordpress.com/ is Orangeblossom/kumquatwriter/Abby's blog specifically dedicated to her experiences with Andy.

http://guardians-song.dreamwidth.org/109048.html is an excellent breakdown of his "apology letter", and it's got a good bit of background information about the whole situation.

There's also a book! [http://www.amazon.com/When-Fan-Hits-Shit-Charity/dp/0965313646] It's mostly about the fake charity, as the name implies.

Holy shit. This came up a few weeks ago and I read some of Kumquat's posts. That situation sounded so awful.

I guess he's still sort of at large...?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-30 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Has MsScribe tried to some something recently? I thought she retreated back under the rock from which she came...

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
For an overview of Msscribe you can read this:

and this:

And another good overview of thanfiction is here:

As long as you realise this about yourself and have enough of a conscience to stop yourself than you're okay, OP.

On another note - there better avenues to channel your ambition, like just writing/creating good art, whether it's fanfiction or not. A recurring commentary on VB/ t.h.a.n.fiction's story is that he actually is quite talented and could have had all the BNF (or real life) fame/praise he wanted if he just channelled his energy into his work rather than producing lazy pieces and then trying to con his fans out of money. But, you know, that's sociopathy for you.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-29 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Bingo, that's what I just don't get about him. He clearly has the talent / creativity to get people's attention for real and in healthy ways, and instead he just channels it all into manipulating people.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-29 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I can relate, OP. I crave love and attention a lot too, and it always makes me cringe when I read about these guys and the things they do for it, because while I would never go there, I still... relate? It's hard to explain, because they're awful people who have done awful things, particularly thanfiction, so I hate to say relate, but I can understand that intense desire to be loved and to have the spotlight.

and then there's my own weird paradox where I both crave attention and love from people but they terrify me. I'm an extrovert with social anxiety. WTF

(Anonymous) 2014-05-30 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
So you want to be a worthless plagarist too?
vethica: (Default)

[personal profile] vethica 2014-05-30 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Obviously they don't want to. That's kind of the point of the secret.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-30 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
The difference is that you recognise that it's not okay to go there. Pour it into positive activity - either online, or in RL volunteering, etc - and you'll be loved for real, not for the web of lies you can spin. <3

(Anonymous) 2014-05-30 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
Aw, I miss fandom wank. At least wank_report is still semi active.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-30 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
Is that a guy or a girl or a concatenation of both?

I don't know that they know.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-30 07:30 am (UTC)(link)
Recently unfollowed Andy on tumblr (I was doing a purge and this secret was aptly timed). I knew there was "past drama" but Holy Shit! I did not foresee how deep and expansive this rabbit hole went.

In before: Why the fuck did you follow them to begin with?
Found him through another another, seemingly chill, blogger. He seemed alright at the time and I mostly stayed for the benign general tumblr posts and recipes.

Really glad I never got involved with all that nonsense....

You wouldn't be the first, you won't be the last. I talked to him back in the LoTR days and had no. idea. what was going to go down.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-30 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I find stories like that so fascinating, just seeing how they manipulate people. Are there any more that I should read?

OP, I think a lot of people have a desire for love and attention. As long as you don't go crazy trying to get it, I think you're fine.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-30 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Mentioned FF7 House above and there's Sarah Saga as well. FF7 is quite similar - with soulbonding and dangerous cults. Sarah Saga is written from a fandom outsider perspective about a housemate who was odd and formed her own fake pagan/fandom hybrid cult.

FF7 House is here: Link (http://www.demon-sushi.com/warning/index2.html)
Sarah Saga is here: Link (http://z3.invisionfree.com/ffo/ar/t8592.htm) - Scroll down for it, the only copy I've found. Worth it though!

I'm not sure I'd define what Jordan (I forget what they're calling themselves these days) wants as love. They just seem to want to control people. I admit it can be addictive to read about the cases though, in a horribly fascinated sort of way. Anyway, I'm sure you are nowhere near as bad, OP, and if you recognise you have needy tendencies, that's a hell of a lot more than they do.
