(Anonymous) 2014-05-30 12:05 am (UTC)(link)This especially pisses me off because I'm a diagnosed Codependent, and yeah, it's not sweet or romantic. I WISH I could have a relationship like the one above, where at least you have some equal give and take. But the term "Codependent" usually applies to ONE person in a relationship, the other person being the DEPENDENT that (knowingly or unknowingly) takes advantage of the Codependent's need to be needed. (Not saying the Codependent is a victim or a saint. We tend to think we know what's best for EVERYONE, and manage to alienate a lot of people that way. (The Dependents usually being an exception to that, because they WANT to be taken care of.) And we're enablers, so if we help out an alcoholic or a drug addict, we aren't helping them, even if we think we are.) A quick Google search will tell you what Codependent actually means, which I guess most fans (and writers) don't bother with.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-30 01:23 am (UTC)(link)In fact, the first time I saw her do that I *almost* wrote her a ragey comment going "HDU imply Hutch is a manipulative narcissist!!11" before realizing that she did not realize what "codependent" actually meant, but was using the word to mean that Starsky and Hutch are extremely attached to each other, and prefer to do almost everything with each other rather than alone, and build their whole lives around the assumption that they will always be together. Which is so, so not the same as "codependent" in the slightest. Even though the word sure *sounds* like it ought to mean that.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-30 01:47 am (UTC)(link)Uh..why defend Hutch specifically in my comment, you mean? That's kind of the whole reason I got all accidentally pissed. If someone *was* going to be as incomprehensibly off-the-mark to assume one of the two characters was a narcissist, it would be Hutch, because he's the one who's always acting superior and criticizing and belittling Starsky for irrelevant shit all the time.
I got all angry about what I assumed was an insult to a character I love because that would be such a massive misunderstanding of his character, since his motives for doing that are pretty much the opposite of what a narcissist's motives would be, and he epically fails basically every single criteria for narcissism, so the whole vibe when he does those things is completely different (like, sort of super-adorable, actually).
