I'm speculating, because I don't know why people do foodplay. I assumed it was at least in part because of the texture of the foods, which wrapping would hide.

Ah, I see! I was thinking more of phallic vegetables being used as an easy dildo substitute, where wrapping is just for sanitary/safety purposes (though I've never seen the potato thing before...).
