To each their own, but considering they have stated in interviews multiple times that Mads chose to play him like Lucifer as opposed to like previous incarnations, I think some upping of evilness is to be expected.

Eh, I like that he doesn't care about anyone except himself and maybe Will and Abigail, although only in a fucked up way that's tied to what he wants. I mean, he does have friends etc but it's only on the surface and he can ditch them immediately if he needs to. He really is just a Thing wearing a person suit, that doesn't follow any norms of feeling, and I find that fascinating to watch.

Nuance or no, he's still the most overrated film villain since Darth Vader.

I don't know. He makes things worse, and then he makes them better. He manipulates Mason into the whole surgery thing, which sucks for Margot, but then he mutilates him so that he's still alive, but the company is in Margot's hands. I think getting rid of the baby was about fucking with Will, and fucking with well takes precedence over everything else in his life, even when he does want to help someone.

... Hannibal is pretty evil, but I thought he WAS trying to help Margot in the show? (For his definition of helping, anyway.) He wanted Margot to kill Mason, and I got the impression he tipped Mason off hoping the threat would force Margot's hand. He just underestimated how vile Mason could be. That's kind of Mason Verger's entire reason to exist, really, to be *worse* than Hannibal Lecter.

And, in the end, Hannibal did turn things around for her a bit. Why else would he leave Mason alive in such a particular way?

I'd disagree. I do think their interpretation of Hannibal is darker, and he does a lot more terrible stuff on the show, but that's in large part because we're seeing him at the most criminally active point in his life. We still see him do "good" things, too, as much as you can call anything he does "good"; he goes out of his way to save Abigail and keep her safe; he does his best to avoid confronting Jack and Alana, two people he genuinely loves, in the finale. He just happens to be up against a wall a lot, especially this season, and when that happens, everyone is disposable.

To be clear, I'm not saying anything he does is okay; Hannibal apologists are baffling creatures. I just don't think that this "darker" version of Hannibal is without nuance.

I see it's usually black and white for many fandoms. I've always thought of Hannibal as this normal guy and what makes him evil is his appetite and the ways to get to his goals. That doesn't mean everything he does has to be rooted from evil. Every single human being has some light, some dark in them. I'm not saying Hannibal is a good man but not everything he does has to have something to do with him being the bad guy.
