I don't understand this secret. Did you think the song was not sad before you saw the movie? Also, because you are a real person and Elsa is a cartoon, you HAVE had a harder life that she has. Because she is not alive. She is a cartoon.

It's not a sad song, though. I think OP's saying it doesn't match up, because it's a sad part in the movie but the song is empowering, like she's overcoming her fears and feeling free (even though really she hasn't done that at all). It bothered me for the same reason.

I think the music of the song is upbeat, but the lyrics always come across as a bit scary to me. "No right, no wrong, rules for me?"

I think it was someone here who observed that the song is basically Hakuna Matata 2: Cheerful on the surface, but really about not dealing with things that have to be dealt with, and followed by another character tracking them down and going, "Nope, that's not how this works, come back and fix this."

That's actually a really good comparison. I started liking Hakuta Matata a lot more when I realized how fucked up it was. Similar thing with Let It Go, but it's still being interpreted as such a song of empowerment that the difference isn't as pronounced.

Hey, by feeling bad about feeling that way, aren't you going along with what you were taught, about not having a right to feel things? If it makes you sad or uncomfortable now, it's OK to feel that way and not want to dwell in those feelings. [hugs gently]

It's not presumptuous to find personal meaning in art forms, whatever they may be. That's one of the main reasons people watch movies, listen to music, and read books or look at art. Because they make us feel things, they resonate with us, they help us express ourselves (sometimes). Me, I cried like three times through that movie (a LOT for me) and it touched me deeply. Yes, a Disney cartoon, which is unusual for me.

To me it felt like a gay metaphor. Doesn't mean it was, but that's what it meant to me: hiding yourself, or letting yourself be who you are, and finding a way to be OK with that and whole and part of your family too. The song was a part of the character's journey. I'm not in the fandom, btw. Maybe someone will have better thoughts for you. :)

I think I know what you're saying, OP... That song stirs up a lot of dust for me, too, in a really uncomfortable way... but at the same time, that's kind of why I like it? Elsa has been suffering for so long in silence, it's both a relief to hear her sing about letting go of all that pain, but it's also very hard to listen to because her solution is cutting off the world and isolating herself. It's very uncomfortable.

But to be fair, while the conclusions that Elsa reaches during "Let It Go" are not good solutions to her problems, I think that we're supposed to realize that her conclusions are problematic. That song happens half-way through the movie, so we know that Anna is going to find her and bring Elsa's plan to a crashing halt. I think, in the context of the film, we're just supposed to be happy that Elsa is no longer suffering in silence, and truly embracing who she is and what she can do. That's why I can enjoy the song even though the larger implications are uncomfortable--it embodies that moment when Elsa (or any person suffering in silence) decides that "enough is enough" and lets go of her pain.
