Lame is kind of an offensive term, just so you know.

I am not looking forward to how this thread is going to go.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-30 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm aware.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-30 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Why are you using it, then? (I'm curious.)

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Because I don't think the complaints against it are warranted, even though I'm aware there's people who offended by it.

Genuine curiosity: who's offended by it? I've heard people say this before but they're always talking vaguely about some disabled people who may or may not be them.

I have friends who have had bad experiences with the word.

It applies to me too and it didn't really bother me at first but the way people talk to my friends when they try to talk about their experiences with it has made me hate it. Plus the pedant in me hates when people say it's no longer connected to disability. It's not like people are completely baffled as to how it could possibly be connected. People still know what it means.

Overall it's not something that I go out of my way to complain about since it's usually not worth it/doesn't bother me nearly as much as other things, but it's annoying and every argument about it just makes it worse.

What is their experience with it? I'm physically disabled as well and have never in my life heard "lame" used as an insult intended to relate to physical disability. I've heard it used to describe horses and also in the current colloquial use of something being pathetic/whatever. When people want to insult someone's physical disability they usually use "cripple" in my experience. Or somethings "gimp" maybe.

I don't really feel right about going into details about this since they aren't my stories to tell.

Shit, I shouldn't have said anything.

Ironic that this reply is exactly what diet_poison mentioned...

This wasn't really what I meant, though. Sarillia shouldn't feel pressured to share a story that's not hers to share.

My partner is disabled and is upset by it. Because to them, it's saying that lame (which is related to disability, even if it is not commonly used in regards to humans) = bad or stupid. That really bothers them. This is the essay that they frequently link to explain why it is offensive to them.

I'm also disabled in a similar way (we have nearly identical medical conditions, it's really kind of fucked up) and it doesn't personally bother me, mainly because I was obsessed with veterinarians as a child and read a lot of books about animals and vet care and so associate it with animals, not people. That said, I never liked the term in its use as slang in the first place, so it's not something I've had to remove from my vocabulary, because I didn't say it in the first place.

IMO I prefer to err on the side of caution; maybe most people won't be bothered by it, but even if it's "only" a few people who are hurt by it, to me, that's not worth it when I can think of an alternate word fairly easily. (I do this for other words, like "crazy". I did not realize until some folks pointed out that it was hurtful to them just how much I used that word. Although, considering I am actually mentally ill, you can rip my self-identifier as "crazy" out of my cold dead hands. >_>)

I'm disabled and I have a weird issue with the word. I live in the US South and 'lame' is still used to mean disabled by very Southern people, sometimes only in reference to animals, sometimes not. (My childhood doctors explained to my parents that my failing muscles in my arm and leg meant the limbs were 'going lame' etc.) My major issue comes when people ask me to do something and I can't or don't feel up for it, literally nine times out of 10, that's the response I get - that word in exasperation "LAAAAAAME" and I just get so upset. So I just can't hold back a flinch when I see it. Not saying it's true for everyone, but it is for me. (inb4 someone replies to this comment with it)
