Leave the Bucky stans alone! I think this is one of the few times in history where stanning makes perfect sense.

That said, I hope it is. :)

I've never watched The Winter Soldier, but what makes Bucky so different from other characters that get stanned? He looks like a younger Loki with face paint

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
A tragic backstory, a complete lack of agency over his own life, a heroic death that was ripped away from him and replaced with 70 years of slavery and torture. Bucky Barnes is not a good man gone bad, he is a good man literally TURNED bad by ambitious, evil men. (If bad is even the right word, as he has no idea who he is or even what he's doing. He is a good man turned into a weapon for an evil cause.)

...Also, his actor is ridiculously skilled at nuance.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I get it. So he's Loki except he's a robot.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Now you sound like a Loki stan, lol.

Two anons up.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I think I fed a troll. Whoops. :(

ayrt

It's alright, your comment was good and there could be other people reading this thread!

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Great comeback.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Just a victim with a tragic backstory doesn't sound very interesting.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
A victim who has potentially murdered his friends at the behest of terrible men, and who nearly assassinated the man he would have died for and who he would STILL die for if he knew what he was doing.

A victim who, in movie-verse, has to be strapped to a torture device and endure the most inhumane of electroconvulsive not!therapy to keep him from becoming human again.

A "robot" who still fears death, and who assumes that the only reason someone other than his handlers would approach him is to destroy him.

By himself, the Winter Soldier might only be moderately interesting, I don't know. However, CA:tWS is a sequel. As such, we know who Bucky was. We know what he feels and what he thinks. We know how he should have died, trying to protect Steve and the world.

And we know that it will utterly ruin him if he starts to remember.

So, yes. In a vacuum The Winter Soldier is a terrifying killing machine and nothing more. But the MCU doesn't exist in a vacuum, which means that the Winter Soldier is an appalling creation, and his very existence is a gruesome and sickening horror story.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, Bucky is just a brainwashed, tortured pretty boy. Stop pretending you're stanning over a character so wonderful and unique.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
You and I will just have to agree to disagree, I suppose. &hearts

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 08:38 am (UTC)(link)
+1 A way overrated character.

YMMV

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 09:02 am (UTC)(link)
Perhaps for you and the other person up there. I walked in not liking tFA's Bucky and expecting to find the Winter Soldier character boring.

I walked out feeling sick and desperate to know how the story ends for him.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 09:07 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. So glad I'm not alone. Sick of hearing about him and Sebastian Stan.

I'm assuming it's because the actor's name is Sebastian Stan.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
those stan stans

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Because while they tried the Tragic Backstory bit with Loki (and Hiddleston is good at the watery puppy eyes for full woobie effect), by Thor 2 it was more than clear that Loki was making his own bad life decisions.

To become the Winter Soldier Bucky has been a mind wiped puppet since near the end of WWII. The only thing Bucky ever did was join the army (I forget if he volunteered or was drafted). It's hard to blame someone who had absolutely no agency in regards to their actions.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
*wanders in to provide unimportant information*

He and Steve went to the recruitment center together for the purpose of volunteering for the army.

His serial number seems to indicate he was drafted, though?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
Thinking that's a fact-check error. Prequel comics to tFA have Steve and Bucky going to try to enlist together. Obviously, they took Bucky but not Steve.

Bucky's memorial wall at the apparently Smithsonian confirms it, at least according to fans who have poured over the scene:

"Born in 1917, Barnes grew up the oldest child of four. An excellent athlete who also excelled in the classroom, Barnes enlisted in the Army shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor. After winter training at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin, Barnes and the rest of the 107th shipped out to the Italian front. Captured by Hydra troops later that fall, Barnes endured long periods of isolation, deprivation and torture. But his will was strong. In an ironic twist of fate, his prison camp was liberated by none other than his childhood friend, Steve Rogers, now Captain America.

Reunited, Barnes and Rogers led Captain America’s newly formed unit, the Howling Commandos. Barnes’ marksmanship was invaluable as Rogers and his team destroyed Hydra bases and disrupted Nazi troop movements throughout the European Theatre."

I imagine the 32 serial number was a factual error, alas. There are quite a few in the movie, notably in flags and 1930s/40s geography.

lol "making his own bad life decisions" truer words my friend.
