I lost interest in a fanfic I was writing when I didn't get reviews.

I know it's petty and stupid. I can't help it.

It's not stupid and don't listen to people who tell you differently. It's okay to need and appreciate encouragement to do the things you do. Very few people would do [insert activity here] if they got absolutely no feedback or sign that anyone cared.

This. One of my most respected, favorite authors was brutally honest about her reaction to critics. She lived and died by the reviews of her work. She understood that her writing was not just something she did, but an extension of her. Something she poured valuable time and energy into.

I respect her a hell of a lot for being honest about that.

As long as you don't do like the person in my fandom who dropped a fic over the content of their reviews. The readers were interpreting the story wrong, apparently. Dropping a fic over lack of reviews is much preferable, in my opinion.

Eh, to be honest I don't buy this whole "writing/posting fanfic should only be for your own enjoyment crap". It's great if it is, but if it were really for my own enjoyment, why would I bother putting it online for others to see?

For me, writing is (supposed to be) a form of interaction. Hearing what readers thought of my writing is very much a part of the writing process. Or at least it used to be... /bitter old fan
