I like my username (Lora) more than my real name (Ashley), and sometimes I'm tempted to change my name for real, or use it irl more often irl just because.

There's nothing wrong with that. I don't know how old you are, but I wanted to be called Tina when I was younger instead of my actual name. Even if that's not the case with you, legal adults change their names all the time.

In my twenties. :) I want to wait until I'm done with school, though, so I don't have to worry about changing my name midway, and having issues with like, financial aid and so on. |D

I have never liked my birth name, but it's far too ingrained in my head as 'me' for me to be able to change it. I'd never remember to introduce myself as something else, and I can guarantee my family wouldn't go along with it even if I did.

Ah, yeah, that makes sense! On my end, I've worked in places where we used nicknames/"false" names, partially to protect ourselves, and partially to make it less scary for the girls who come to camp, so I've had some practice with going by a different name. :3

Is it odd that I've been reading your user name as lolcarol this whole time, I never really noticed the 'a'

Honestly, even if I knew your irl name, I don't think I'd be able to think of you as anything but Stella; that'd just be weird. |D

I've been using the handle Nonny since I was 17. As (besides family) all of the people I have met as an adult have known me by that name, and call me by that name, I'll be changing it legally to that at some point (ie, when I feel like dealing with the mountain of paperwork that is involved in a name change.)

But, I HATE my birth name and have for as long as I can remember. It didn't help when my parents told me the embarrassing and fucked up story of how they decided on my name (which I will tell if wanted). I also intend on getting my middle name changed, and my last name because I want no connection with my abusive father; my partner and I (okay, well, mostly me) researched surnames and picked one that sounds nice and fits us well in regards to pagan symbolism.

And while, yes, Nonny comes from anonymous (I was lurking on a SFF writers' forum and saw something I had to reply to... and Nonny was not in common use as a term for anonymous in 2002, and I didn't plan on staying around in the first place... yeah about that -- I met at least 4 of my romantic partners on that site), I've used it so long I honestly don't think I'd respond to anything else. At this point I go "huh? oh wait that's me" at my birth name, hah.

It does make for some double-takes here when people reply to "nonny", esp if it's capitalized, and I've had to explain that, no, I'm not anonymous, it's my actual name... LOL
