I wonder how many of those people have not bothered to read into Mockingjay.

You know, this is probably actually the problem. I know a bunch of people who just stopped at Catching Fire cause they heard Mockingjay wasn't good. (I didn't like Mockingjay myself, but I still read it to get the finished story, and also to make my OWN decision on its quality.)

A lot of people didn't like Mockingjay? I thought it was the best in the series tbh. I mean, yeah, the epilogue was kind of weird (mostly the part where Katniss talks about how Peeta finally coerced her into having children. I just can't really see him doing that. I generally try to think that she was saying it in a tongue-in-cheek manner)

Opinions on it seem to be split. Some of my friends really liked it. I personally liked it the least of the series cause I felt like the actual quality of writing took a hit. Other people don't agree with that but disliked it cause of their favorite characters dying, or the kind of "war is hell" theme or other various story stuff of that nature.

If anything it is definitely polarizing, and some people seemed to have just decided to just not read it at all because of that? Which seems silly to me because I think people should form their own opinion of it, but you know.

About the kids thing- I don't think Katniss was ever opposed to having children, just having children in her specific circumstances. I don't have the text in front of me to quote, but there were several comments that made me think that way. Some childfree people seem to get their knickers in a knot because Peeta EMOTIONALLY MANIPULATED HER TO BECOME THE NORM AND HOW DARE COLLINS RUIN THEIR ROLE MODEL!!11!!!1! I read it much differently- I think Katniss was well aware of his feelings, responded with something along the lines of "I can't even think about that right now", and he checked in on how she felt from time to time. Any "pressure" was probably from her own issues, and she reached the point where the fear wasn't paralyzing. Would she have worked through those issues if Peeta hadn't wanted children? Probably not, because there are so many other things she had to focus her energy on, but that doesn't mean he forced her into it.

Mockingjay in general was interesting. Collins could have gone one of two ways, and I think a lot of people were expecting her to go for the more action-packed one. Instead we got to witness Katniss's complete breakdown, and as a result a lot of things happened off screen.

I agree.

I agree with you. Katniss originally didn't want to have children because she was terrified that they' end up in the Hunger Games. Once the Hunger Games had ended, she was able to let go of that fear, allow Peeta to love her, allow herself to love Peeta, and feel safe creating a family. It's HUGELY IMPORTANT to the themes and emotional impact of the series at a whole. It always amazes and depresses me how little reading comprehension some Hunger Games books fans have.

I don't think action-packed would have been possible in terms of producing an emotionally gratifying ending - which she did.

ayrt

That's fair and I can agree with your interpretation. Like you, I also believe that she was only opposed to having children because of being in the impoverished District 12 and the threat of the Hunger Games (since those were the only reasons she gave for not wanting a family in the first book), I think it was only that one line in the epilogue that seemed a bit jarring and weird.

Katniss is not particularly emotionally articulate and bad at expressing feeling unless she's really pushed into a corner (which is partly why she was so wooden in the propos until she was put in situations that were bound to elicit strong emotion from her). She also doesn't strike me as someone who would be gushy even once she'd recovered from her trauma - she's stoic and understated when she's mentally OK. So I took 'Peeta finally talked me into it", or however exactly it's phrased, with a pinch of salt, given that (a) I don't buy Peeta coercing Katniss into doing something she flat out hated the idea of, and (b) Katniss shows no signs of disliking children, and effectively acts as a mother to Prim. She doesn't want to have children because she can't deal with the thought of not being able to protect them. Admittedly no parent can ever do that fully, and that's probably why she took time to come round to the idea, but I always took it as Katniss' way of saying that Peeta had got her past her fears.
