Maybe it's rather like many things listed on tvtropes in that the concept existed but there really wasn't a clear name for it? I dunno, I don't read Homestuck.

I remember the time when people seemed to love those weird YuGi-Oh shipping names and tried to come up with similar ones for all other kinds of fandoms. It didn't really stick, though (I think?).

Was YGO the first fandom to do that? I thought Pokemon did it too. Not sure which came first, though.

I think Pokémon came first, given that Rocketshipping played a big role in popularizing the word "shipping" in fandom.

I remember when I first heard of Rocketshipping, I was like "what a gloriuos pun". That was before I knew that "-shipping" was a common suffix for ships. It would make so much sense for that to have started it all...

(Anonymous) 2014-06-01 11:23 am (UTC)(link)
Well, since Pokemon is older than YGO, it probably was Pokemon. Or maybe they each did it independently.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww! Get over it. :)

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
What are moirails?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
It's like your bff who you can tell anything to and always knows how to calm you down when you're freaking out, except trolls in the Homestuck universe consider this a form of non-sexual romance.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
ah, ok thanks

In universe it's also specifically meant for a relationship between a violent and calm person to be foils to each other, one of whom protects the other and the other one returning the favor by reigning them in when they are getting self destructive with it (note trolls have a very different standard on this, murder is far more acceptable in their culture)

hahahaha /guilty

I like to think of them as having actual quadrants too. Like, these characters have multiple relationships at the same time, view them as romance, and also living in this AU-type of world where quadrants are an actual thing.

And there are totally Karkats! Who fit outside the spectrum and worry about not having kismesesse andasdgfg;iudg

I'm sorry I use the homestuck lingo at times to flail orz

not the secret maker, but it's really obnoxious, especially to people who can't or won't read homestuck

I don't mind isolating people who feel bad about reading jargon when I jargon at other jargon people.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
how do you know you're talking to other jargon people when it's a completely different fandom

Because context.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-01 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
if you're friends with them...

(Anonymous) 2014-06-01 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
This, haha, it's not even Homestuck for me but I blend terms from other fandoms all the time. I don't really care if other people don't get what I'm talking about, the people I'm intending it for do. Sorry that not all of my jokes/stories/fanmusings are universally accessible!

Yep.

They can either figure it out from context, or skip over the fic/discussion/whatever. I wouldn't do it if I expected a completely generic audience, but, well. The fact that I'm doing it is your hint that I am not aiming for a completely generic audience!

I've never read Homestuck so if people use these shipping terms, I've never noticed. It's probably not going to last forever as with many shipping terms.

I think this falls under the category of "ship and let ship", OP. I like to use Homestuck terms for other fandoms bc I think it's fun.

I've never seen anyone else yell at someone for not using them. If they are, that's a problem. But seriously...you don't have to do it. Let those who do have their fun.

This.

If it works for Homestuck fen, then don't gripe.

If it works for Homestuck fen so well that they feel it's useful in other places, too, don't gripe. Nobody's making you do it. (And, as the comments for this secret prove: if you aren't a Homestuck fan but are super-curious about the pairing being discussed, a quick "hey, what does moirail mean?" will net you a five-second summary! You aren't excluded from the convo for forever and ever; all you have to do is ask - or Google - and then jump in if it still sounds interesting!)

If it works for Homestuck fen so well that they use it in other places, and it's picked up by the people in those places, well. That means it's filling an empty space in the language for those people. They've had that moment of "Wow! I always wished there was a nice short word for that concept, and now I've found one!" and they're probably not going to give it up.

As [personal profile] diet_poison says: as long as they're not yelling at people for not using it (which I, also, have never encountered) then let them do whatever they've found works best for them.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-01 11:18 am (UTC)(link)
IMO people applying Homestuck ship terms to their own relationships is even worse. Calling your gf/bf your "matesprit" is like the new version of furries calling their partners their "mates".
