Re: A rant on authors hating fan fiction

If you share something with other people, those other people will interpret it in ways that match their own personal experience. If Lestat means death to Anne Rice, then people who read Interview and see that parallel are likely to write about what death means to them. That's not taking something away, because the original novel is not modified in any way. That's simply part of the process of interpretation, and if something is truly personal to you such that you don't want other people interpreting it, you probably shouldn't share it with others.

Yes, this. Agree wholeheartedly.

Yes. She marketed her grief, and sold the film rights to her grief, so pardon me if I blow small raspberries at the "respect her grief."

Oh go eat some poison dicks

You really can't see how somebody might take a moment that's very personal to them and use a creative outlet to get it out of themselves? And just because they then want to share that work that lessens their grief? I mean, I see fanworks as a matter of course and what's gonna happen if you make something popular and don't think you should have a bug up your butt about it, but you aren't talking about that. You are disrespecting that woman's very real feelings over the death of her child. And for that you can die with those poison dicks stuck in your throat as befits a piece of worthless dogshit.

Seems a little extreme, don't you think?

I would've just wished the same upon anon if I cared enough (as in 'hope someone disrespects your very real feelings over your loss') but death by poison dick in the mouth just leaves a rather bad taste, y'know?
