The last good satisfying fic you read?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
For any reason. Just the last fic you read that you were pleased and satisfied when you finished reading.

Name the fandom and characters (pairing if applicable) please!

Captain America: Bucky/Steve (AU)

Critical Feline Mass http://archiveofourown.org/works/1679630/chapters/3568478
Adjusting to civilian life is hard for any military veteran — especially for one ex-sniper with a cybernetic arm, a classic Harley, and friends who keep trying to ‘help.’ When Sam Wilson at the VA sends Sergeant Barnes to rent a room from the hottest guy in the DC area, Bucky thinks maybe civilian life is worth it after all. And then he finds out Captain Rogers is everything Bucky’s not: a real hero, a Medal of Honor recipient, and an all-around nice guy. Bucky doesn’t have a chance in hell with him.

Sam was a huge help to Steve Rogers when he left the military. In the spirit of ‘pay it forward,’ Steve decides to rent out his basement room to a vet in need. But when Sergeant Barnes shows up on his doorstep, he knows he’s in for a world of trouble. Barnes is exactly what Steve never knew he wanted, from his bedroom eyes to his wicked innuendos. And he’s Steve’s tenant.

A love story in twelve chapters, including two Harley-Davidsons, a guardian angel, multiple snipers, the only woman who can scare them into behaving themselves, spontaneous kittens, and one attacking sheep.

Teen Wolf, Stiles/Derek, forced marriage, historical romance, trope-y bodice ripper type stuff :) Like reading a cheap romance novel for my fandom. I was pleased.

Endeavour, gen

^this, according to my browser history. It's a gen Endeavour WIP by a person who, were this fandom any bigger, would probably be considered a BNF. They are pretty good at writing and their Endeavour stuff is enjoyable all the way through.

This particular thing is set in a dark fantasy AU, and I could eat dark fantasy AUs of detective shows with a spoon ^^ May just be my favourite kind. Also, it seems to be heading in the direction of friendship and h/c.

Drinking Alone, Except With Two. MLP:FIM, Rarity/Spike. It's a darker read of Rarity than I normally go for, but I feel like it fits with what we know of the characters and is a logical posibility for where their relationship will go. http://www.fimfiction.net/story/87884/drinking-alone-except-with-two

The Mummy & Pacific Rim

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm gonna cheat and give two, but I found them both in the last couple of days and I can't pick. So here's both:

Take That, Bembridge Scholars! by seren_ccd ( http://archiveofourown.org/works/297832 )
The Mummy movieverse, Rick/Evy + Jonathan

The world has been saved and there's really only one thing left to do. Evy writes a strongly worded letter to the Bembridge Scholars. Oh, she gets married, too.

I've been browsing for Mummy fic recently, and this is just thoroughly delightful and sneaky and Evy. God, I love that woman. Also Jonathan. And Rick too, yes, while I'm at it. Perfect O'Connell/Carnahan hijinks just after the first movie.

King of the Night by Skull_Bearer ( http://archiveofourown.org/works/1697828 )
Pacific Rim, Hermann/Newt focus with some Sasha/Aleksis, Herc/Stacker and kid!Mako in the background

Hermann Gottlieb is the most promising dancer in L'Opera de Paris, until a tragic accident robs him of his career. Now he must remake himself as a singer within the Opera, aided only be a mysterious presence known only as 'the Ghost', who seems to have his own reasons for seeing Hermann succeed. A Pacific Rim/Phantom of the Opera fusion.

Not one I'd have imagined myself enjoying, as it's a Phantom of the Opera fusion with Hermann as Christine, Newt as Erik and no Raoul in sight, but it was actually really, really satisfying. Sasha is awesome in the background, Hermann is bitter, Newt is weird and nowhere near as immoral as Erik (though perhaps somewhat careless with people's safety nonetheless), and I liked the details of the songs and the operas and the clash of methods between Newt and Hermann that's still there.

"My Graceless Heart" by amatara (http://archiveofourown.org/works/1465162) It's a prequel fic to s5e2, 'The Very Long Night of Londo Mollari' and a really good character study.

I hope you enjoy it! IMO there's a surprising number of small, sweet fics for that fandom. It's so lovely. :)

I remember first looking for fanfic and being enchanted by how endearing the fic was. But, again, it's been a long while so I'm sure there's even more good stuff now. Despite all the blood and violence, that movie was surprisingly fluffy.

Maslow: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/3627510/1/Maslow

It was technically a reread of an old favorite, but dammit, it's an old favorite for a reason.

Loki, Charles Xavier

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Charles can tent his fingers and say "Now, Loki, tell me about your childhood" and BS doesn't fly 'cause he can read his mind, and Loki reluctantly has to respect him because he's got a brain the size of a planet, and Charles has made a career of taking damaged and destructive young things into his bosom. IT MAKES ME FEEL SO GOOD.

Thanks for the rec, was gonna be afraid it was OOC, but damn Loki is on point thus far, I can imagine the snarl and the haughtiness.

I usually avoid fics with all-lowercase titles, so I'm glad I followed the link for this one without looking at the title. Very understated angst with none of the explosive drama I typically associate with love shapes, good handle on the characters and their relationships both platonic and romantic. It was also refreshing to see Rin in the middle for once. I should probably feel ridiculous for crying, but I can't be bothered.

He Says He Is An Experimental Theologian. It's awesome, and now I really want to read HDM. (You don't need to be that familiar with HDM to read it, but you probably do have to be familiar with WTNV, or at least up to episode 27-ish.)
