This is a phenomena I have encountered in EVERY SINGLE FANDOM... I get into a new fandom, look for fics, find the most popular one, read a few chapters and realize it is TERRIBLE.

Someone should really do a study on why this is such a widespread occurrence.

Hypothesis: Most of these fics are big multi-chaptered things. Multi-chaptered things are going to draw more people than one-shots do, simply by coming up to the top of the page more. The authors tend to update relatively frequently too because it's easier to write bad stuff fast than good stuff fast. Then people start reccing it (especially if it's for a popular pairing), and it gets more hits.

Eventually it gets popular enough so a large chunk of the fandom will at least have heard of it, so more people check it out. It comes up on popular fic searches so more people and new people check it out. From there, feedback loop.

Frequently these fics would be of the 'it's not that bad for a while but oh god it goes downhill so fast' type too.

that makes sense... I'm pretty sure I just saw that in action recently. A fic goes up, it looks interesting so I try reading it, I think it sucks, but the author updates fast and there are like a billion chapters so everyone reads it, recs it, comments on it, etc.

And I'm left feeling like I've been taking crazy pills or something.

I'm pretty sure it's because a lot of people seem to think that longer = more impressive, whereas I find the longer it is the more likely it is to get really terrible.

THIS. There's been so many WIP fics out there that started out fine, but went downhill really fast.

Even good fic s can suffer - the writer is good, the plot has great potential, but the story gets bogged down ten, fifteen or twenty chapters in. Then the writer ends up slowing down in their writing until some end up stalling entirely.

OMG THIS SO HARD!!!

Chuunin Exam Day anyone? It started off really interesting and then degenerated into character bashing and author wish fulfillment. Or maybe that's just how I see it.

This is why I almost never refer to rec posts when I'm new to a fandom; it annoys me irrationally much that that's what most people seem to do.

I also think some of those huge multi-chapter fics are like, the first big one that everyone flocks to and there's a great sentimental support for it, and a whole number of imitators that some of which can be better than the first one everyone lauds.

Yeah. Someone should do a study on why people like to watch 'bad' television as well...

People like trash. It's a simple as that.
