No idea which fandom you're talking about, but that's true of most fandoms. The most famous fic is always a little scary.

I think all the newcomers (if we are not talking Internet newbies) understand this perfectly. Nobody's going to assume that because the most popular fics are god awful, the rest must be the same.

Now granted, the popularity of these says something about the tastes of the majority of the fandom. But the majority of anything is always going to have shitty tastes. *eyes Katie Forsythe hard*

This is probably dumb and immature of me, but for some reason I feel SO GLAD to meet someone who hates Katie Forsythe as much as I do. We are almost brain-twins when it comes to Sherlock Holmes, huh?

This is a phenomena I have encountered in EVERY SINGLE FANDOM... I get into a new fandom, look for fics, find the most popular one, read a few chapters and realize it is TERRIBLE.

Someone should really do a study on why this is such a widespread occurrence.

Sadly, tracing the picture leads to a website called "girlmeetswhisk". But, as the name implies, it is a cooking website.

So...I've got nothing.

But, yes, OP. In general I agree that it's sad when bad fics become the "headliners". Especially if it's a bad fic that's famous for something other than being bad. :(

I just realised that every single fandom I've ever been in has suffered from this. The most popular fanfic is always terrible. It is bizarre, isn't it?

For a while, the most popular fic in the Sherlock fandom was Performance in a Leading Role, which is actually brilliant. So that was a brief exception. But normal rules apply again.

In every fandom I've been in recently, the top 5 fics on AO3 will go like this:

1. High School AU (possibly also ABO or wereworlf)
2. Crossover with either Sherlock or Teen Wolf
3. ABO fic or Werewolf fic
4. Another high school AU
5. Coffee shop AU

Occasionally one of those will be good. More often... they won't.

Or in the case of Teen Wolf, there will be a dozen really horrible, super popular fics that they'll run into, one after another.

I feel this way about pretty much anyone in fandom running across the craziness that is ABO, to be honest.

I mean, I've been in fandom for 20 years and the sudden ABO culture leaves me baffled as anything. It made sense to be in, say, werewolf canons, but now it's EVERYWHERE. I can't imagine what a new fan, wandering in, would think.

I think, when you're brand new & in love with a fandom, it doesn't really matter what you read because it's automatic hearts & flowers everywhere! I go back half a year later to read my intro stories and I think.... this is what made me fall in love with this fandom??? o_O Soooo, it doesn't really matter, is what I'm saying.

Every fandom has that one fic. My mind immediately went to one in my main fandom and I'll bet a bunch of other peoples' did too. Ugh. I feel you.

But yeah, sadly the big juggernaut fics usually tend to either be pretty bad, or unfinished, but likely both. There's a fic for MCU on AO3 that has over 15000 hits and it's a high school AU of all things. But it has so many chapters that things are starting to get more convoluted when it comes to what happened in past events and it's clear that the author has forgotten what's gone on in it so far. But people are still reading it, and I have no earthly idea why.

To Express Fandom in Food

I saw this and was baffled. I figure it must not be any one of my fandoms.

I can't recall off the top of my head any candy or food representing any particular fic I've read, but I got to thinking, if my fandoms, themselves, were represented like this secret, let's see...

One of them would be a picture of a vanilla ice-cream cone dropped on the floor. (It's a popular meme in the fandom).

One might be represented by red-hot spicy curry...

A very minor one I've written a few fics for and stay on the margins of would have a picture of lamb and plum stew, possibly accompanied by bread.

A former fandom would be represented by a box of donuts, possibly sitting next to a bottle of beer or whiskey.

And my major / main fandom, for which I've done the most fan work would have the bestest food-picture of all: A glass bottle of milk and the (cartoon) hearts of my enemies.


Alright, now I leave it to other f!s readers to guess my fandoms.

oh god I know I've read this fic. I know the scene where one char puts stuff on the popcorn and it should be disgusting - and it is but both chars eat it. man this is going to drive me CRAZY. why am I in so many fandoms and I can't remember. *smacks self in head*
