>My friend's face went utterly white, an event which was terrifying to observe, for the man was ever pale and aesthetic at the best of times
he was ever pale and what at the best of times?!
We totally are. I'm sure there's a Homestuck name for this type of relationship somewhere out there. Holmesallegiance, possibly.

To me, more than using the wrong word, I'm wondering *why* the author would describe the man as "ascetic" at that moment. Just mentioning the paleness is sufficient to point up his new pallor as unusual. And if the author was trying to use "ascetic" as a synonym for "thin and drawn" (which it isn't), it's still redundant unless mentioning that the man was looking thin even for him.

I forget which one Undiscovered Country is. Jog my memory?
My biggest problem with it all is that she basically thinks it's great to have the premise that Watson was totally lying about, like, everything. Oh, not something interesting like making up a whole cool AU where everything was actually totally different, but instead, she just steadily strips out canon fact after canon fact whenever doing so is convenient to make the characters and universe entirely revolve around Holmes and Watson's Epic Love That Is More Important Than Anything Ever, like taking building blocks out of the base of a Jenga tower. So it eventually winds up that Holmes' entire personality is actually not at all like the Holmes in the stories. And Watson's entire personality is nothing like the Watson in the stories. And basically everything about their lives was a lie too. Also, most of the things that happened in the stories didn't actually happen (soooo...the opposite of writing in missing scenes?) but were fictionalized events Watson cooked up to replace long marathon sessions of highly melodramatic sex. But not in a cool AU way either. More like a "I'm fixing everything about canon" way. So...if I'm a Sherlock Holmes fan, it's because I actually *liked* the books, right? So why am I reading this? Argh.
However, "Twelfth Night" is one of the funniest slash fanfics I have ever read in my entire life. She did manage to hit the mark with that one.

Quiite. She took The Game and used it for the purpose of making the canon into a bland OOC love story. I guess it especially grates on me because solving mysteries and taking lots of active interest in other people's lives is one of the major parts of the Holmes&Watson dynamics and throwing this away for the sake of sex and drama simply makes them unlikeable. Which is a horrible thing.
"Undiscovered Country" is her retelling of DYIN - in the "let Holmes taste his own medicine" vein, of course :/

I should try it, I guess. Funny H/W is an awesome thing, so thanks for the rec.

Twelfth Night still reads pretty weird -- she has that style, you know -- and sort of OOC, but I was giggling a lot at least.
