I just realised that every single fandom I've ever been in has suffered from this. The most popular fanfic is always terrible. It is bizarre, isn't it?

For a while, the most popular fic in the Sherlock fandom was Performance in a Leading Role, which is actually brilliant. So that was a brief exception. But normal rules apply again.

OMG I love that fic!

I've read it so many times now.

I just discovered a similar gem in the X-Men First Class Fandom.

Anarchy in the UK (terrible title, it put me off for ages) by Yahtzee

Ooh, thanks! I've read fic from that author before and enjoyed it.

Funny thing, for a while after the movie was out, the most popular fic was some frat fic I never understood the appeal of (totally OOC, terrible writing). Now it's a tie between Anarchy and 9 11 10.

I've seen Yahtzee in a few fandoms I've been in. Great writer.

I only found her this week for the first time. She has a load of novel-length stories on A03. Downloading a selection now.

Uh, that fic is horrible. Incredibly out of character with the author feeling the need to define "industry" terms as if they are some sort of insider. I think we can figure out what a script girl is, author. Just hideously bad and over the top.

NAYRT Agreed agreed. That story made me cringe.

The real person cameos from British actors made me cringe when they started up (and I love that fic). I have to say they were handled very well, though. They ended up really illustrating the kind of environment a gay actor might be in when coming out. I do kind of wish the author had used original characters, as she was excellent at those, or even just knowing pastiches.

I didn't find the story notes offputting. I thought they were a nice courtesy to others who might need them. I just skipped them.

Even without me having been interested in finishing that fic, I think calling it hideously bad seems a lot like sour grapes, LOL
