I don't think The Doctor's Wife was necessarily retconned. The TARDIS was still unlocked because she left herself unlocked. It could be that the Great Intelligence distracted the Doctor which lead to him almost choosing the wrong TARDIS and that is where Clara intervened.

People are so focused on hating Moffat that they kind of skip over the fact that the Impossible Girl's role is to undo what the Great Intelligence did.

The Great Intelligence went into many many tipping points of the Doctor's past and pushed him towards failure where he would have otherwise succeeded. Clara comes in after him and sets things back on course.

Pre-GI the Doctor would've picked the right TARDIS, post-GI and pre-Clara he would have picked the wrong one, post Clara he'd be back to picking the right one again.

DA

But the Great Intelligence is also hackneyed and stupid, so knowing this doesn't actually help any.

This, yeah. Really this.

Soooooo.....Moffat wrote a convoluted thing that turned on itself a million times, only to arrive back where he was before? This, by him, is plot? Someone needs to drop more than a few writing textbooks on him, IMO.

This is why it doesn't bother me. Clara was just putting things back to what they were in the first place. Obviously mileage varies, but I'm fine with Clara.

It's little things like that make it pass for me as well. I find myself wondering how so many people miss these details, or are they simply so offended by the faults they see that they are blinded to the less explicitly stated bits.

(Like the implication in "Day of The Doctor" that all the "End of Time" plot was done by the High Council, and the commanders we see in DotD are the heads of the army - a different section. EoT happened, failed, then 10, 11 and the War Doctor come in after that fails and tries to save the planet.
