Ok, OP, EVERYONE has way more chemistry together than Anakin/Padme.

There's a reason I shipped Obi-Wan/Anakin like whoa back in the day. And Obi-Wan/Padme, and to an extent, Obi-Wan/Bail (i refuse to accept that The Clone Wars novel Wild Space is non-canon. it was written to be a tie in anyway and it was GLORIOUS for the Bail/Obi-Wan snark and awesomeness), etc etc.

To be honest, I always thought that the Anakin/Padmé romance was intentionally written to not be about sexual tension so much as two extraordinarily lonely people coming together. Anakin's idealization of Padmé often makes me think of this -- that the kid was super lonely and so he clung rather obsessively to the kindness she had shown him. It's also why he was psychotically terrified of her dying (especially after his mother's death) -- because he was afraid of losing that source of unconditional love.

For Padmé, I always kind of saw her as the type of person who was so devoted to her job/cause that she had never done anything for herself. And so she gravitated towards Anakin because of his "brokenness" especially after how his mother was killed. She wanted to fix him.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but I always thought the films made it clear that theirs wasn't really a healthy relationship.

You are way, way overrating George Lucas

I mean, I can see saying that it wasn't portrayed as a healthy relationship, but the rest of it... it's a really interesting idea and it would have been cool. The loneliness stuff, that's interesting. But I don't think it's in the movie at all. Just not there.

I think part of it is due to cuts in the movie. In deleted scenes for Attack of the Clones, for example, Anakin flat out says that he was very lonely at the Jedi Temple but he often thought about Naboo and the beauty of the palace to feel better. Padmé also reveals that she had hoped to already have a family of her own. I agree that it's definitely not explicit in the movie, but I think traces of it are still there.

Yes ObiPadme shipper! That ship was my gateway to fandom.
