Judging people by their icons

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you form an impression of people's characters by their icons?

For instance, I always think of fauxkaren as really classy. Chard always comes across as a bit off the wall. Vethica as grouchy.

Darkmanifest's icon makes me think she's classy.

My nefarious scheme to appear more sophisticated than I am is effective! Now excuse me while I get popcorn down my shirt while sobbing at old Disney movies.

Oh damn, I'm flattered dude. But I'm not usually grouchy! At least, I don't think I am. Maybe I need a friendlier icon. @_@

Nayrt

Yours makes me think you're saying "oh really now?"

Your icons just looks really grouchy. And cute :)

I just see it and think "Kirara." Have no idea if that is who it is or something else. >_>

I don't even think it looks grouchy. More like "come at me bro" or "orly now" (an anon said something like this and I agree)

Kind of? There are some icons I find really annoying or just dislike and I tend to notice a bleed over into my feelings towards that user. I try not to, but it happens.

Kind of. I picture intrigueing as this punk-ish girl with lots of colourful clothes and crazy facial expressions. And I can never stop picturing fingal with their (her?? I'm suddenly not sure of their gender) face covered in grime.

I can only imagine what people's perception of me must be like. My icon is literally a group of weird colour blobs that were supposed to represent a pomegranate (which nobody has ever guessed about).

/I always have these weird icons, my tumblr fannish blog being no exception, and the imagineyouricon blog posts crack me up so hard. "Imagine your icon singing the song Itty Bitty Pretty One to you on your birthday". It's like, am I having an absurdist birthday?? Where's my personal Eugene Ionesco???? ?

At first, maybe. If I don't recognize the person and all I have to go by is their icon and a comment or two it might influence my opinion, but I'm always aware it isn't based on anything substantial. When I've read enough of the person's comments it doesn't tend to mean anything other than, "Oh, they like this character" or, "Oh, they have good taste in icons".

Yes. I try not to, but when someone uses an uncalled for gory icon in an unrelated post, or a shippy icon for a juggernaut pairing/a fandom draco-in-leather-pants darling I can't stand anymore, I tend to think less of them.

feotakahari's icon always gives me the impression that she's a 13 year old emo weaboo for some reason. I feel kind of bad about it though because she seems like a nice person in general when she comments

I'm biased towards people with animal icons, good lighting, and good resolution. Jpeg-y stuff makes me sad.

a_potato's icon sometimes makes me hungry.

I don't get impressions. I just use them for identification.

Not really judge in the sense that you describe, but I do tend to think that when someone uses a character that are male/female as their avatar I tend to think that the poster is the same sex as that character.

Visp has a pretty smug icon so I interpret every one of her posts as being sarcastic and condescending.

Not really, it helps me recognise people easier if they use the same icon. I do appreciate nice looking icons of course, and I suppose I do take that in first but I don't make an impression from it.

Gif icons are distracting to me so I don't like people who have them.

Not particularly. Mostly for association's purpose, though I smile every now and then whenever Moieris(?) uses that Lagoona Blue icon.

Re: Judging people by their icons

Eh, it depends. I usually don't but I guess I do make subconscious links between the icon and who they are.

kaijinscendre's fassbender icon always gets me excited because I think it's him for a millisecond and then I realize I'm on a fandom forum and no, it's not him. But thanks for the icon, I just love his face more than I should.

I just wonder if people think my icon makes them think I'm insane.

I'm not saying I'm not.
