This isn't a new trend, but I really dislike it when people are... lovingly mean to their favorites? In my fandom a lot of people tend to go "FUCK YOU I HATE YOU AND YOUR STUPID FACE" with the meaning "wow I love you you're gorgeous". Stuff like that crops up all the time, with insults meant to be teasingly affectionate. I understand what they mean, but... I don't know. I just like it when people are nice. :(

I'm with you. I really dislike it and it's crept into the fic in my fandom. I really wish it would go away.

ESL here. Me and other ESL friends always thought this was an Anglo thing?

This is one of the things we found confusing and the hardest to adapt to in English fandoms, as in our language it would be utterly rude (and unthinkable) to insult something you love, and we actually have spent some time discussing this in private, like "Do you think they really mean it? Or are they being ironic?" Idk, it's actually surprising to learn it's a trend an not something cultural.

personally, it's something I've only seen in fandom. I think fandom is a thing that encourages people to be extreme about things--like you don't just love a character, you cry whenever they appear onscreen. it makes you appear like a bigger fan than someone who has an understated reaction, and I guess going into "I want to beat this idiot into a bloody pulp omg" mode is just a way to assert your emotional attachment/fannishness to other people.

This is totally a trend. I wouldn't try it with anyone who has not already adopted the trend.

But definitely not a cultural thing. Definitely not.

Completely a trend and not even a very widespread one outside certain areas of fandom. I've only seen it on Tumblr personally, and I've never seen it outside of fandom. And I feel pretty much the same as you about it (American here, if it matters).
