Fandom trends you're hating

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
This goes beyond tumblr, btw.

"Everyone must be trans, non-binary or some other, possibly even made up lable gender because fetishising gay people isn't special snowflakey enough anymore!"

Re: Fandom trends you're hating

(Anonymous) 2014-06-01 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
...yeah. i'd probably be rake over the coals for saying this on tumblr, but I agree.

the sudden need to have a lot of headcanons for characters as "gender nonconforming" or "trans" or whatever, (especially when that headcanon doesn't really make sense for the character in question), sort of strikes me as a bit skeevy.

like it's being used as a "fashionable" or "quirky" addition to a character (like mental illness, don't even get me started on that)

I think it initially started as a way of exploring the issue sensitively, probably by people who were actually gnc or trans or w/e, but now it's so often handled poorly, and.... ugh. no.

Re: Fandom trends you're hating

(Anonymous) 2014-06-01 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my god, this. Does every fandom have to have trans headcanons now? :/

Re: Fandom trends you're hating

(Anonymous) 2014-06-01 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't mind it so much if people went into detail about those headcanons, like how they would fit into canon and if anything would change, what obstacles the character might face, etc., but most don't do that. It's just 'bi-romantic demigirl POC [character] is so important" or 'demisexual aromantic transmale [character] is my lifeblood' or whatever. Don't just slap the labels on like you just found the Special Snowflake Generator, do something with them!

Ironic kawaii weeaboo fashion stuff. Unironic's worse, but at at least people don't think it's fashionable.

for fic trends:
I know it's the obvious answer but, a/b/o fic. So done with it.

Also sick of the fuck-or-die/drugged/in heat tropes that never touch on how it's non consensual because people are drugged or whatever out of their minds in most of those scenarios. I probably wouldn't hate the trend so much if it was skeevy non/dub-con, but it's so rarely handled like that and so it just rubs the wrong way and builds the hate.

This is really specific to my fandom of the moment, which is Teen Wolf. I hate the trend of taking any bad thing that has happened in canon and writing an AU about it happening to Stiles. Just...all Stiles all the time!

1st person, present tense fanfics. Please end it now.

Also hating the ongoing glorification of the military and this insane need for everything to be "realistic" (which is usually very unrealistic because the 14 yr old internet-badass writer has no idea of actual reality).

That color thing on Tumblr. Where they take a screenshot and then do like...squares of color under it from the screenshot.

Does writers not finishing their kink meme stories count as a trend? If so that.

I hate the current trend of my fandom that somehow all fics deserve the same recognition or otherwise you're an elitist scum. NO OF COURSE NOT. I read fics that I enjoy because the writers have earned it, because I enjoy their style or their stories, not because I have an obligation to read all the works from my fandom.

Where the fuck did people get the idea fandom is a democracy?

People getting mad about female characters in porn while drawing or writing male characters in porn.

Example there's a few rule 34 of some ladies in my fandom. They get rotated around porn blogs sometimes. About every time one pops up someone inevitably complains about objectification. Yet a majority of the fandom is built on the back of porn. It's not porn of the white male they tend to focus on so I guess it's not ok.

I don't know if that's a trend...

My favorite character's eyes are grey. Fandom insists on drawing him with golden eyes, to the point of cosplaying him like that. It's petty but holy shit I hate it.

This isn't a new trend, but I really dislike it when people are... lovingly mean to their favorites? In my fandom a lot of people tend to go "FUCK YOU I HATE YOU AND YOUR STUPID FACE" with the meaning "wow I love you you're gorgeous". Stuff like that crops up all the time, with insults meant to be teasingly affectionate. I understand what they mean, but... I don't know. I just like it when people are nice. :(

A/B/O or anything where a whole group of people are automatically submissive or subservient and it is inherent and not just a sexual preference.

Woobifying villains at the expense of heroes. Making villains more complex, yes. Believably having them change in a way that takes time and makes sense, yes. Writing it so they were really good all along and the heroes were evil, no.

Rape is love or anything where there are clearly consent issues but the author doesn't recognize them. Oh, and arousal equals consent. That is the worst. No is no even if they are turned on.

"Femslash solves everything". Legitimately the stupidest and most objectifying trend I've ever had to endure, and I've been in fandom since 'zine days. Lesbians are not a badge for you to wear to prove how enlightened you are.

there's a trend now for people to use the latest social justice issue of the week in their fic or art or headcanons or whatever

like the "trans headcanons" mentioned above, or giving the characters a mental illness. so often it ends up being terrible and insensitive.

also A/B/O, and other skeevy BDSM rape-is-love AUs where consent does not exist.

Referring to certain characters/actresses/singers as a 'flawless queen.' It's almost always used for POC and it always immediately makes me feel like the person in question doesn't really like the character/actress/singer so much as they want to appear to like them in order to win magical represntation points. It just feels so much to me like basically saying "I like a minority, bear witness to my open-mindedness!" It's like the Tumblr version of having one black friend who you keep referencing to show people how not-racist you are.

Re: Fandom trends you're hating

(Anonymous) 2014-06-01 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
Fics rooted in Tumblr prompts that are cranked out damn near faster than light. Similarly, I've encountered so many author's notes that fall along the lines of , "lol, i have no idea why i even wrote this, but here you go". It's just a big ass can of what the fuck that I keep tripping over no matter how many times I try to kick it away. I don't write fic often, but I do make an effort to give my stories some thought and take the time to make sure I want to post them. That's one reason why I have not yet publicly posted anything for my OTP (even though I have a lot of ideas and even a draft).
