"Everyone must be trans, non-binary or some other, possibly even made up lable gender because fetishising gay people isn't special snowflakey enough anymore!"

...yeah. i'd probably be rake over the coals for saying this on tumblr, but I agree.

the sudden need to have a lot of headcanons for characters as "gender nonconforming" or "trans" or whatever, (especially when that headcanon doesn't really make sense for the character in question), sort of strikes me as a bit skeevy.

like it's being used as a "fashionable" or "quirky" addition to a character (like mental illness, don't even get me started on that)

I think it initially started as a way of exploring the issue sensitively, probably by people who were actually gnc or trans or w/e, but now it's so often handled poorly, and.... ugh. no.

Oh my god, this. Does every fandom have to have trans headcanons now? :/

I wouldn't mind it so much if people went into detail about those headcanons, like how they would fit into canon and if anything would change, what obstacles the character might face, etc., but most don't do that. It's just 'bi-romantic demigirl POC [character] is so important" or 'demisexual aromantic transmale [character] is my lifeblood' or whatever. Don't just slap the labels on like you just found the Special Snowflake Generator, do something with them!

I especially hate it when it's "must be trans because character doesn't act stereotypically *gender*" because that is about as counterproductive as it gets.
