Gen fic recs and requests
(Anonymous) 2014-06-01 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)Rec great gen fics, or request gen fics for particular fandoms and/or focusing on particular characters or events. (Actually, I'm pretty sure that with the really large fandoms, you can be as specific with your request as you want, as long as it's not focused on shipping.)
Remember that long plotty gen fics, rather than little character studies or missing scenes, are the rarest, so some people might be especially glad to get them.

Re: Question about the classification of gen fic:
(Anonymous) 2014-06-01 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)I generally wouldn't. Unless the pairing is only "non-canon" in the sense of the characters never actually getting together or explicitly acknowledging their feelings, but UST or something was canonically hinted at. But I guess there could be exceptions.
For me, I suppose it depends on the pairing: if the "shippy moments" (if they are explicitly shippy) are say, between members of a juggernaut slash pairing or a highly popular unestablished het pairing, probably avoid it. If the moments are between two supporting/peripheral characters who don't have a big shipper fan following, or between a main character and a supporting character s/he might have had UST with but never canonically got together with, that's fine.
And basically, anything that would cause the author to label it X/Y or classify it as slash/het, even if 95% of the fic has no romantic happenings going on between them, should be avoided too. For example, a 20 chapter fic in which Kirk and Spock or Harry and Hermione are totally un-romantic except for that one scene at the climax in which they kiss or one or both of them acknowledge that their feelings are romantic, even if it doesn't lead to sex or the start of a relationship in the fic, does not really count as "gen."
However, IMO hoyay or ship-tease that's on the same level as the kind of hoyay or ship-tease that would be acceptable in the canon material would count as gen. ;)
Re: Question about the classification of gen fic:
(Anonymous) 2014-06-01 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)But if you have established characters who exist, yet aren't necessarily even the focus, or if they are get little if any romantic screen time, it can still be classified as genfic.
(Here's another question though - what about smut? I've seen people try and pass smut off as gen, but... even though smut doesn't have to be romantic, it is still sexual, right? So wouldn't that not be gen?)

oh boy, here we go (Lewis, Rivers of London, ACD Holmes, Hornblower, Holy Flying Circus)
Some stuff I've not recced before:
soft-serve ice-cream by singlecrow (http://archiveofourown.org/works/1264780), Rivers of London, a Lesley&Nightingale(&Peter, sort of) pre-Broken Homes snippet. Good characterization, great language.
Coffee Break by Philomytha (http://archiveofourown.org/works/1119365), Rivers of London, a Lesley&Nightingale&Peter ficlet. This author is bloody amazing at RoL fic - and I mean bloody amazing.
Black Shuck by Aquila (http://archiveofourown.org/works/142089), ACD Holmes. "A retelling of HOUN, Cthulhu-style". I'm serious.
Decided by Moonbeam (http://archiveofourown.org/works/683784/chapters/1254681), Lewis, post-series. The best post-canon thing ever. Fluff. Lots of it.
l'Heure d'Hiver by binz&shiplizard (http://archiveofourown.org/works/1095384), Hornblower, Bush&Hornblower. Unashamed fluff. H/c.
Cow Stretching Time by Irmelin (http://archiveofourown.org/works/298171), Holy Flying Circus, friendshippy. Amazing. Stylistically, too.
As you can tell, there IS a shortage of case fic/plotty stuff, so I'd be grateful for some. Even though I'm pretty sure there's none I don't know of.

I think there was a Bush&Hornblower author who posted great stuff on LJ, but I don't remember their username. I'll google a little and give you links if I find them.

Erik Lehnsherr and the Rats of NIMH [X-Men First Class AU]Erik thought that life was good, in a dull sort of way, until Charles the talking rat showed up. Now he’s back in action and things don’t seem so simple: since when did he agree to work for the US government? What does the National Institute of Mental Health have to do with mutant rats? And who the hell managed to steal his work from the inside of a locked filing cabinet?
Tangled Webs [Teen Wolf] Peter leaves Beacon Hills, and takes Stiles with him. It doesn’t matter how many times Stiles manages to escape Peter, because the werewolf always finds him and won’t ever let go.
Front Lines [Cabin Pressure] A character study on Martin Crieff, if Martin had gone into the military before getting his pilot's license and going to work for MJN. Pre-canon.
Invisible Series [Sherlock] John had had the knack for as long as he could remember.
It wasn’t that he could become invisible, exactly. The laws of physics worked quite well in his vicinity, thank you very much. It was just that people tended … not to see him.
Amateur Theatrics [MCU] In which Thor’s primary problem-solving method (a mighty blow from Mjolnir) fails to have the desired effect on a magical artifact, and his secondary method (a mightier blow from Mjolnir) proves to be actively disastrous.
Better Living Through Pizza [MCU] Steve takes some time off from soldiering and Avengering to get his head on straight, and Clint is assigned to keep an eye on him, because apparently SHIELD believes in the blind leading the blind. Steve really needs a hobby, since modern television shows baffle him, but Clint keeps bringing him DVDs and pizza.
I have a lot more Sherlock and MCU fics (mostly Loki-centric and some Steve-centric). Still have a shit ton of SPN ones saved too (though I have not read them in a long time).

Thank you <3
In fact, I'd take more Sherlock gen recs. Preferably friendship. H/c would be nice. Plotty case fic, very nice.
Re: Gen fic recs and requests
Level 65 Paladin Looking for Group "I think I met someone," John says at his next therapist's appointment. "A friend." "Really?" Ella asks. She sounds pleased, and also surprised. "What's his name?" John nods. "Really. His name's Sherlock. He -- he plays the same game as me, the online one. We party together."
A Gut-Wrenching Experience John struggles with an illness that is at first routine but miserable and then becomes downright dangerous…. And might it be Sherlock's fault that he is ill in the first place?
I got some shorter ones (plus one deaging fic, one fic where John is Sherlock's son, and one sort of AU with kid!John) but these are the best I think.

It's a Dangerous Business, Going Out Your Door - MLPFIM adventure gen fic, long, descriptive, awesome worldbuilding, super fun. There is a very, very small romantic subplot, but it's short and ends partway through. Synopsis: Rainbow Dash, Rarity and Applejack go on an adventure through some unexplored parts of the world in which Equestria is situated, encountering various animals (some ponies, some not) and exploring new landscapes, in order to find a cure for a terrible sickness Twilight has contracted.
ETA: that's not an official synopsis or anything. I made it up
Mad Men, Buffy, Harry Potter, Parks and Recreation
(Anonymous) 2014-06-01 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)Re: Mad Men, Buffy, Harry Potter, Parks and Recreation
A Little Behind the Times [Harry, Dumbledore] - A foray back in time to retrieve a Horcrux means that Harry has an unexpected encounter with someone he didn’t intend on seeing. Suddenly, Hermione’s rules about not meddling with the past become a lot harder to keep.
Accidents [Hermione] - When signs of magical ability manifest in muggle children...
All the Dementors of Azkaban [Harry, Luna, others] - AU PoA: When Luna Lovegood is condemned to Azkaban prison for her part in opening the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter is the first to protest. Minister Fudge is reluctant to comply, but then again he never really had a choice in the first place.
I probably should mention that you should not expect the above fic to be serious in any way. I read it whenever I want a laugh.
All Roads (Eventually) Lead to Home [Hermione] - After the end of the war, Hermione goes to find her parents. They aren't where she expected them to be.
Cocktail Time [Rita Skeeter, Gilderoy Lackhart] - Not many people know this, but Rita Skeeter and Gilderoy Lockhart flatted together for a while after Hogwarts. They stole each other's hair products rampantly. He painted her nails, she transfigured his clothes. She wrote about him, he invited her to parties. It was fabulous, darling. But then, things went wrong.
Fear in a Handful of Dust [Hermione, Pansy] - Hermione’s ear meets the cool flesh under James’ starched shirt. She thinks that maybe a lung or two has collapsed, and her thumbs run along his throat, hunting for the shudder of a pulse, and wishing James’ lips weren’t turning the soft blue of the ocean, with none of the ocean’s fervor.
Hush Little Baby [Sirius, Harry, Teddy] - Two young men, two infants, two generations, and promises made on the brink of war and in its aftermath: the legacy of family and a godfather's love.
Fair warning, I think there is some James/Lily in the above, but it's not the main focus.
insurgere [Tom Riddle] - Hufflepuff is the house of the leftovers, the losers, the forgotten. Well, Tom Riddle thinks, it's time to change that.
The Sceptic’s Guide to Spotting Impossible Beasts [Hermione, Luna] - Somewhere out there there’s a Crumple-Horned Snorkack with Hermione Granger’s name on it.
Sharing [Fred, George] - It is the closest he can get to explaining that sharing with Fred is not like sharing at all, because Fred is the other half of himself.
Snakebites [Tom Riddle] - When Tom finishes first year, he returns to the orphanage.
still too early to dream [Molly] - Sometimes, Molly hates Lily Potter.
The Strange Disappearance of Sally-Anne Perks [Harry, Hermione, others] - Harry recalls that a pale little girl called Sally-Anne was sorted into Hufflepuff during his first year, but no one else remembers her. Was there really a Sally-Anne? Harry and Hermione set out to solve the chilling mystery of the lost Hogwarts student.
A Better World [Draco, Albus, others] - A lost child wanders into Knockturn Alley, and who happens to find him but Draco Malfoy?
Desk Duty [Madam Pince] - A librarian's job is never done . . . especially not at Hogwarts . . . and especially when a certain toadlike High Inquisitor is nosing around.
Disorganised Crime [Harry, Neville] - In Muggle London, heroes end up in jail.
Falls the Shadow [Petunia, Harry] - After his seventh year at THAT place, Petunia has a final meeting with her nephew.
Inappropriate Charms [Aberforth, Dumbledore, Ariana] - Aberforth had always been fond of goats. Goats were special.
Alternate Summary: "My own brother, Aberforth, was prosecuted for practicing inappropriate charms on a goat. It was all over the papers, but did Aberforth hide? No he did not! He held his head up high and went about business as usual! Of course, I'm not entirely sure he can read, so that may not have been bravery..."
All I have to say is, it's not what the summary makes it sound like.
Sybill Trelawney and the Unexpected Gift [Trelawney, McGonagall] - Sybill Trelawney learns to live with her Inner Eye, cooking sherry, and Minerva McGonagall, in that order.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-02 12:49 am (UTC)(link)Harry Potter, Merlin BBC, MCU
Getting the Hang of Thursdays (Characters: Snape, Hermione. One chaste Snape/Hermione scene, slight Hermione/Ron but the neither the plot nor those scenes is romantic): Snape and Hermione are stuck in a time loop; a pretty dark fic.
Merlin BBC:
Tear the Lies Asunder (Characters: Arthur, Merlin, Gwen, Knights. Canon Arthur/Gwen, not really part of the plot). Author's description: Arthur sees the incisions on the back of Merlin's neck, and finds out Merlin almost never actually goes to the tavern - and it's with this knowledge that he overhears Guinevere explain Merlin's capture and enchantment to the knights.
Bonus: sequel and WIP sequel (scroll down) A Drop of Blood in the Dawn and Shining Shards of Shattered Hearts
Intentions (Characters: Arthur, Merlin, canon Arthur/Gwen) Author's description: Sorcery is banned in Camelot, so Arthur can’t fathom why anyone would seek the sorcerer Emrys within the castle walls. That would mean he’s unwittingly harbouring a sorcerer, and that’s ridiculous. (Click the authors name for the WIP sequel which is also gen.)
MCU
To Fly Like a Moron (Characters: Darcy, Vadinho) DARCY IS THE PUMAMAN AND IT'S WONDERFUL. A MCU/MST3k movie 'The Pumaman' crossover.
