It really depends on the fandom and the plot of the fic, IMO.

Generally speaking, when the modern AU-ness of it is a major part of the fic on a meta level, it's good. When it's just a handwavy excuse for the author to write generic romantic plotlines in a "normal" setting, it's bad.

Exactly. I think that's really how I feel about AUs anyway - I like them when I feel like the writer is trying to explore legitimate what-ifs. But it doesn't sit well for me when I realize they're just trying to make their ship easier to write or more plausible.
