How long til you know if things are aren't going the friend's way? And how much do you trust this friend to look after the pup?

I'll agree that, with the information you have given us, you look like the best option for the pup, or the RSPCA.

I don't know. He's my brother's friend, not mine, and I tend to get them all mixed up anyway (one white skinhead in camo clothing and a beanie looks the same as the next to me). My brother will pass it on when it becomes relevant, probably.

Although given that him and his friend just showed up on Friday with the dog, let him off the lead in the house, and said "oh, John* can't take Dodge where he's going tonight so he's staying here"...

That sounds very concerning to me. In your place I might consider not returning Dodge to 'John' regardless of his situation.

Yeah. I don't know what they were thinking, if they were at all, but you don't just let a dog loose inside another dog's territory, no matter how friendly all parties involved normally are.

So many people who own dogs don't really know basic things about them - like how they perceive territory and pack status.
