I think... we've accidentally gained a dog

[personal profile] ansela_jonla 2014-06-01 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
We've been looking after a dog for one of my brother's friends. He's an 18 week old staffie pup called Dodge (short for Dodge E Bastard). If things don't go the friend's way, we'll end up with Dodge for up to six months.

He's a sweet little dog. A bit boisterous, thinks body parts are chew toys, tends to go to the toilet where he is, and doesn't understand the concept of "bed time", but all these are expected of a puppy. The thing is, I'm not so sure my mum would be willing to give him back after six months, or that he'd be willing to go.

By that time we'll have housetrained, microchipped and vaccinated him. Apparently his owner doesn't want him neutered, for some reason, but that may be necessary, in order to curb certain undesirable behaviours. The fun in getting all that done is that he gets carsick, as we discovered today, and the vet we use is most definitely not within walking distance.

The other options are the friend's brother, who wants to train Dodge to be aggressive, or the RSPCA, who would definitely neuter him before adopting him out to someone, and then the friend would definitely never get him back.

If you can't keep it give it to the RSPCA. I would not trust your friend's brother to be anywhere near the dog, especially a fucking bull terrier. That is a dog attack in the making. Also, get it fixed because unless you are going to breed him (which again I would not trust the friend's brother), no point in keeping him intact.

Keep it away from your friend's brother. You're condemning him to a life of abuse, probably a dog attack and subsequently getting put to sleep.

Friend's brother sounds like trouble waiting to happen. :O

I'm kind of confused about why the brother's friend can't take him back though? or was that the same person?

My brother's friend is in a spot of bother with the law right now. I don't know the details, don't want to know the details, but it could see him sent to jail.

ahhh, gotcha. So the dog might not have a place to go back to.

But yeah, I think friend's brother should be out of the picture as far as the dog. Wanting to raise a dog to be aggressive = bad news for everyone, including the dog. D:

We got a dog "accidentally" like that when I was a teen. My mom's best friend was in the hospital, he was supposed to stay with p a few months, but never left.

I think you have to decide now if you and your mom willing to take responsibility of taking care of a dog for the rest of its life - because as you say, it's unlikely you'll be willing to let him go after six months.

My mum's owned pet dogs all her life, I've grown up with them in the house. We already have two adult dogs, both of them rescues; Monty, a roughly nine year old Rottie cross, and Zara, who is a staffie-cross and about four years old.

Sounds like you could give him a good home, if you're willing? Definitely wouldn't give it to the friend who wants to raise him to be aggressive.

I'd keep him and neuter him. Not only would you be curbing possible undesirable behavior, but you'd help keep him out of the hands of people who want to use him as a breeder. And yes to everyone else who says not to let the friend's brother get his hands on the puppy. Being a fighter is no kind of life for a dog. :(

It sounds like you're by far the best option for that puppy. I wouldn't trust him with either the current owner or his brother, neither of them sound responsible or like they care about the animal's welfare. And with the RSPCA, you have to remember the possibility that they won't be able to find the puppy a home, in which case he'll be put to sleep.

I love Staffies, and I agree with everyone else, please don't let the brother get Dodge. Please please.

And neutering is such a great idea, as it appears you already know.

Good luck, and I hope you post photos!

Neuter that dog. Lie if you have to (say that your vet won't take him otherwise or something), but holy jesus there is no reason to not neuter a dog that's not a) owned by a responsible breeder for b) the express purpose of breeding it responsibly. It is so much better for the health of the dog (and your mental health) it isn't even funny.

Also, if you're taking care of the dog for six months, it's your dog, and the original owner is just lying to himself. By that point, you will have owned it for more than half of its life, and have also put the money into microchipping, vaccinating, etc. In my opinion, it's either you or the RSPCA, since anybody training for aggression is NEVER an option.

Why the hell does someone who won't be able to take care of a dog for 6 months have a new puppy in the first place?

I don't think the possibility of going to jail was in his plans when he got Dodge originally. That said, he's not long come back off a trip to Eastern Europe, which he sure as hell wouldn't have been able to take a pup under 6 months (the youngest you can get a pet passport iirc) along on.

For the love of god don't let the brother anywhere near that dog! Either keep him yourself, or send him to the RSPCA, but sweet lord keep the dog away from the brother.

How long til you know if things are aren't going the friend's way? And how much do you trust this friend to look after the pup?

I'll agree that, with the information you have given us, you look like the best option for the pup, or the RSPCA.

I don't know. He's my brother's friend, not mine, and I tend to get them all mixed up anyway (one white skinhead in camo clothing and a beanie looks the same as the next to me). My brother will pass it on when it becomes relevant, probably.

Although given that him and his friend just showed up on Friday with the dog, let him off the lead in the house, and said "oh, John* can't take Dodge where he's going tonight so he's staying here"...

*Not his real name.

That sounds very concerning to me. In your place I might consider not returning Dodge to 'John' regardless of his situation.

Yeah. I don't know what they were thinking, if they were at all, but you don't just let a dog loose inside another dog's territory, no matter how friendly all parties involved normally are.

So many people who own dogs don't really know basic things about them - like how they perceive territory and pack status.

Keep him, get him neutered (no reason to keep him intact unless he's being bred, and deliberately breeding is goddamn awful considering how packed the shelters are), please don't take him to the RSPCA, if you HAVE to take him to a shelter, make sure it's no-kill, and keep him the FUCK away from the friend's brother.

Staffies are absolutely lovely, affectionate, and friendly, but they're also really commonly abused to be used in dog fights (and the fact that your brother's friend doesn't want him neutered is also a bad sign, since neutered dogs are calmer and if you want an attack dog, that's not a desirable trait). Plus, honestly, after caring for him for six months (and while he's still a baby), he'll be incredibly attached to you.

Yeah, I think you did just get a dog. Take care of him, okay?
