I didn't see it, but some of my friends did and I met them afterwards, so I heard their discussion and analysis. From what they said, your predictions sound inaccurate. They said it doesn't make her not-really-evil (it's more of a "this is an explanation for why she's evil, not an excuse") and that the important scenes from Sleeping Beauty are there and faithfully done.

OP--I just watched it, and I don't think your friend was accurate!

Most of the story changed VERY significantly...in fact, the only scene that stayed in tact was the curse scene. Everything else was altered a lot.

I would say that Maleficent never really becomes evil, which was my point. I mean, they even softened up the fact that Maleficent chose to have Aurora straight up die in the original.
