Depends on the fandom. If it actually takes place in the real(ish) world, then I'm okay with it, though it isn't any better than other AUs for me. If it's something like Tolkien? Nah. Not unless they're reincarnated into a later age of Middle Earth.

Technically, a "later age" of Middle Earth could be our modern day. From Tolkien himself:

'Middle-earth', by the way, is not a name of a never-never land without relation to the world we live in .... And though I have not attempted to relate the shape of the mountains and land-masses to what geologists may say or surmise about the nearer past, imaginatively this 'history' is supposed to take place in a period of the actual Old World of this planet.

That said, the concept of reincarnation in Tolkien's legendarium is so... particular that I don't think it could ever work the way I've seen with most reincarnation fics. I actually prefer non-AU modern day fic, if we're going to be doing modern day Tolkien at all. That's why we have immortal characters.
