Re: Doing a gift exchange....what the hell do I get this person?

I've just started knitting and was surprised by how the cost of yarn can add up. There were a bunch of funky/colorful yarns where I was like "If someone got those for me it would be great, but for spending my own money I want to get something simpler/more practical". 20-40$ would I think be enough to get several skeins....

I will have to see if I can find a guide to what are good types of yarn to buy (or maybe other knitting supplies)?

"Good types of yarn to buy" is such a subjective thing that I wouldn't recommend actually purchasing yarn unless you've seen the person's work and know what they like to use/make. I'd be far more inclined to suggest a gift card to a nice local yarn store if you know of any, or a set of pretty stitch markers. Here's the Etsy category for stitch markers; I can almost guarantee that you'll find some related to your recipient's other interests. https://www.etsy.com/browse/craft-supplies/knitting-crochet/stitch-markers/?ship_to=ZZ
