Actually, reincarnation is one of the very few ways I do like modern AU in Tolkien fics. (See: http://fandomsecrets.dreamwidth.org/1021338.html?thread=753624986#cmt753624986 - I can subscribe to the "Middle Earth is this world" concept quite easily.)

That and imaginative modern reinterpretations of canon, where Bilbo is straight-up English, and Erebor is some modern world country that has been taken over by terrorists.

Almost all other modern AUs feel like there is not enough connection back to canon to really make it believable.

Of course, the execution of any given fic is dependent on the writer's talent, and sometimes even straight modern AUs can end up good, but I am less inclined to give them time.
