Puppy update

[personal profile] ansela_jonla 2014-06-02 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, Dodge is still here.

It's gone from "just Friday night" to "over the weekend" to an unknown length of time. John* was meant to come pick him up today, but he never showed, and my brother now doesn't know when John is coming for Dodge.

An added twist is that even if John avoids having a holiday at Her Majesty's leisure, he's going to be moving in somewhere that doesn't allow dogs anyway. In which case Dodge will be staying here permanently. And he will be getting neutered whether my brother likes it or not.

He's an adorable little thing. Full of energy, no sense of boundaries, personal space, or limits, never stops playing. He found the rat cage tonight, with its rodent inhabitants; that was funny. Zara and Monty keep trying to put him in his place, but he doesn't seem to understand that yet. He will, eventually.

Question for other staffie/pitbull owners on here: do your dogs think they're lapdogs?

Thanks for updating - I hope he finds a happy home with you!

Everything I've ever heard about staffies and pibbles says they love their people and want to be by them all the time, so yes, expect giant lapdog cuddles.

It really sounds like you're doing what's best for the dog, so be proud of yourself, and enjoy your new buddy :D

Glad to hear he's getting neutered and as long as you guys can handle him, I'm glad he's staying with you because it sounds like it was his only good option, honestly. Bets of luck! (post pics?)

I tried taking pics earlier; he tried to eat the phone. Then he bounced onto the sofa and launched himself at Zara's back. He missed, but the attempt was made.

haha, fair enough! You tried. Not having your phone eaten is important. (this story made me giggle though.)

Another thing he likes doing is jumping on your lap, as if he's going to cuddle for a bit. From there he climbs onto the arm of the sofa, up that, and ends up half on the back of the sofa, half on your shoulders/neck as he scrambles back round to where he started.

My pit bull mix loves to be cuddled and hugged. She's 65 pounds and loves sitting in laps.

Take or leave advice–

Re: energy and bouncing around– get a pull toy, play tug-o'-war. Fastest way to tire him just enough that he'll settle down, and then learn to like that. It takes about a week before puppy goes, "Hey, lying around is actually kinda nice." It won't give you hour upon blessed hour of peace, but those tired-of-pulling gaps definitely will give you a training window. That's when you teach him to sit, lay down, stay. Also good for leash training. Tugging on a pull toy also tends to lessen teething woes.

(throwing balls or sticks produces a different kind of tired-out = sleep naow. Then he wakes up and has ALL the energy EVER, all over again)

As for lapdogs, all doggiez iz lapdogz! Even my late Neapolitan mastiff-cross believed firmly that he was a lapdog. And Great Danes literally aim their butts at your lap, and then park (google image search: "great dane lap dog" if you wanna giggle).

All dogs are lapdogs, regardless of age, size, or mobility. My old Lab/German Shepard/Newfie was a lapdog.

I love pits, they're so cute. Very much people-dogs, and family-protective.

Have fun with him. ^^

He sounds like a sweetie who is better off without your brother's friend or his brother. A friend of mine had a staffie who was one of the most affectionate dogs I've ever met, and my Rottweiler thinks she's a lapdog when it suits her, so it takes all sorts! I'm sure Dodge will be very happy with you guys :)
