Yeahhhhhhh.

Steampunk could be real cool but most of it is just bad. It just seems like a lot of it is based on a really narrow idea of what the source material is and what the genre is trying to do. It almost comes off as a caricature of both Victorian/Edwardian stuff and of the whole clockwork machinery aspect sometimes.

Sometimes it's not even a caricature. It simply has nothing to do with Victorian/Edwardian stuff. Like I have an irrational hate for steampunk fashion. I think it stems from the fact that when I was introduced to the genre, I was told I was going to love the fashion the best because I adore Victorian/Edwardian fashion. But then I saw what passes as steampunk fashion and it's nothing but sexy corsets, leather, goggles and top hats. And with clockwork gears clued all over. It was if someone had been given a description of Victorian fashion on a breaking phone line and then went, "Screw it. I'll fill in the rest with whatever" without even thinking about doing research.

And I hate that. This genre should be cool. It would be cool if it was more accurate with a few tweaks here and there. But like you said, it is so removed from its source material that it is ridiculous.

One thing I love about Steampunk costuming is actually the lack of need for accuracy, but then that probably stems from knowing too many people who are deep into historical costume and are super serious about accuracy to the point that they don't even seem to be having fun anymore. I like that people can just pull some things out of their closet, throw in some goggles, and go have a good time.
