Acknowledging that people feel attraction whether they want to or not is not incompatible with acknowledging that people can think for themselves. I spent a long time being in denial about liking girls. I was still attracted to them even while I was trying to ignore it. I did nothing about it, I tried to avoid thinking about it, but the attraction was still there.

Based on all the things you've said, this mysterious external influence seems to be the "anything goes culture of today." And the media, with the movies and the TV and the music videos.

But that can't be, can it? After all, there have always been gay people. So the culture must always have been "anything goes." And the media must always have been corrupting the kids.

External influence? Then how does someone raised in Christian environment (religious school, lots and lots of church, Christian music, anti-gay, little to no "secular" influence, no known LGBT adults in his/her environment), become gay?

How do gay Iranians exist? How do they choose to become gay? Where are they getting the external influence? From Pharell's "Happy" music video?

How does Alan Keyes' daughter become a lesbian?

40% of homeless youth in America are LGBT, thanks to Christian parents believing their children need "tough love" and they'll "choose" to be straight. If there were any choice involved, these kids would have never chosen to be hated.

You keep on living in your righteous bubble, though. Maybe you'll be lucky, and able to keep on living, snug and secure in your Christian circle, able to conform to what they judge is "pure."

Maybe you'll be unlucky like I was. Hope you learn how to swim quickly.

I was raised fundie. I don't care what fundies want to do, as long as they stay the hell out of the government. Unfortunately, fundies are dedicated to making America a theocracy, so every now and then we've got to check them.

That's hilarious, because you are almost certainly one if you think you can just turn off your attraction to people.

Newsflash: when people choose celibacy? They are making a sacrifice and choosing not to act on their urges. But they still feel them. It wouldn't mean much of anything to anybody if they could just turn off attraction.

Attraction is not something you choose. If you trip and fall, you will throw your hands out to break your fall. You don't have to think about that. You also don't have to think about being attracted in order to be attracted.

And being attracted doesn't mean you "jump" somebody. It doesn't mean you strip off all your clothes and scream "Fuck me now!" It just means you're attracted. And if circumstances are favorable, and it's the right time for both of you, you may ask this person who inspires feelings of attraction out for a cup of coffee or dinner and movie.

But it doesn't matter what you do or don't do. The attraction is just there.

I like the color red. I did not choose to like the color red. It just happened. Yet I can choose not to buy another red shirt. Sexual attraction is like that.
