people feel attraction whether they want to or not

This is the basic premise that I disagree with.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
How do you explain people feeling attraction even when they do not want to and do everything in their power not to?

Obviously I just didn't try hard enough to be straight.

OK it really is getting very very late and I need to be at work early tomorrow. So I'm not answering everything, but I'm not "bowing out" like someone upthread said. I'll answer a few though. To answer your question: External influence. Not a good influence, obviously.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
Based on all the things you've said, this mysterious external influence seems to be the "anything goes culture of today." And the media, with the movies and the TV and the music videos.

But that can't be, can it? After all, there have always been gay people. So the culture must always have been "anything goes." And the media must always have been corrupting the kids.

Who am I kidding, though? You have completely refused to spell out your views in plain English. So either you're a troll, or you don't actually know what you believe.

Nah, I'm pretty sure at this point that Anon thinks homosexual urges come from the Forces of Hell, but just doesn't want to say it, either because it'd piss people off and destroy any remaining credibility Anon has as a rational person or because Anon is afraid of saying (or typing) certain words due to the Voldemort Effect.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
External influence? Then how does someone raised in Christian environment (religious school, lots and lots of church, Christian music, anti-gay, little to no "secular" influence, no known LGBT adults in his/her environment), become gay?

How do gay Iranians exist? How do they choose to become gay? Where are they getting the external influence? From Pharell's "Happy" music video?

How does Alan Keyes' daughter become a lesbian?

40% of homeless youth in America are LGBT, thanks to Christian parents believing their children need "tough love" and they'll "choose" to be straight. If there were any choice involved, these kids would have never chosen to be hated.

You keep on living in your righteous bubble, though. Maybe you'll be lucky, and able to keep on living, snug and secure in your Christian circle, able to conform to what they judge is "pure."

Maybe you'll be unlucky like I was. Hope you learn how to swim quickly.

Pretty sure the "external influence" the OP is talking about is of the "not of this world" variety. I.e., the Devil tempts people to be gay.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-04 07:30 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I figured as much.

I was raised fundie. I don't care what fundies want to do, as long as they stay the hell out of the government. Unfortunately, fundies are dedicated to making America a theocracy, so every now and then we've got to check them.

Obviously. But your opinion doesn't hold up when confronted by the vast majority of human experiences.

That literally doesn't make sense.

If someone chopped off your hand, could you choose not to feel the pain?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. (not OP) People do that -- inhibit pain with their thoughts.

Is this a common practice? Is it something you can choose to do without a great deal of training? Is it practical? Is it reasonable to ask people to take a difficult action like that so you (general you) don't feel icky?

Orson Scott Card, is that you?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 11:29 am (UTC)(link)
Are you asexual?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think they're real.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually (if you are the OP) you should believe that asexual is the only true orientation and everything else is choice.
diet_poison: (Default)

[personal profile] diet_poison 2014-06-03 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Depends on the angle they're coming from. It could be that they think bisexual is the only true orientation and you have to choose not to feel part of it.

Nooooo sorry, that was really ambiguous wording. I think asexuality is real, but I don't think the anon you were replying to is for real. I think they're a troll.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-04 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
That's hilarious, because you are almost certainly one if you think you can just turn off your attraction to people.

Newsflash: when people choose celibacy? They are making a sacrifice and choosing not to act on their urges. But they still feel them. It wouldn't mean much of anything to anybody if they could just turn off attraction.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-04 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
You are wrong.

You are factually, testably wrong.

I think you are an asexual who never figured out that you're not like the majority.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-04 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
You're just a world-class professional at repressing your emotions aren't you?

Attraction is not something you choose. If you trip and fall, you will throw your hands out to break your fall. You don't have to think about that. You also don't have to think about being attracted in order to be attracted.

And being attracted doesn't mean you "jump" somebody. It doesn't mean you strip off all your clothes and scream "Fuck me now!" It just means you're attracted. And if circumstances are favorable, and it's the right time for both of you, you may ask this person who inspires feelings of attraction out for a cup of coffee or dinner and movie.

But it doesn't matter what you do or don't do. The attraction is just there.

I like the color red. I did not choose to like the color red. It just happened. Yet I can choose not to buy another red shirt. Sexual attraction is like that.
