And yet I totally understand. Popular fandoms are going to be dominated by (as a secret a couple days ago pointed out) stupid, shitty, OOC fic that pushes the shallowest possible buttons. In a small fandom, you're not drowned out by that; you can get a better signal-to-noise ratio.

Yeah, but OP is saying they like small fandoms is part because there aren't any critics. So I have a feeling it's not the quality of fic that makes OP happy.

not necessarily. sometimes the ratio of shit to quality can be much higher in small fandoms if the majority of the fandom are terrible writers

I don't know if I agree with this. Sturgeon's Law applies everywhere, and if the smaller fandoms get out of it, it's by chance that the few authors they have are really good. I've also seen complaints about small fandoms with zero good fic because by chance they have zero good authors.
