Hipster fandom!

We had the exact same thought.

And yet I totally understand. Popular fandoms are going to be dominated by (as a secret a couple days ago pointed out) stupid, shitty, OOC fic that pushes the shallowest possible buttons. In a small fandom, you're not drowned out by that; you can get a better signal-to-noise ratio.

Pretty much yeah.

I think it's a bit silly to write fics based on whether or not the fandom is too "mainstream", but hey, whatever floats your boat.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you sure it's not just because you have thin skin and don't like crit?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Zinga.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh snap.

Or maybe it's because they have shitty characterization?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Same, although unfortunately "no feedback" is also often part of that list. :(

You are the hipster of fandom congrats.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Good for you, OP.

I'd rather see people write for my fandom who are genuinely interested in the source material.

Isn't that limiting? What if you have an idea for a fanfic of a mainstream fandom that won't go away?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but I don't think it's that limiting. I have so many plot bunnies for small fandoms occupying my mind, to the point where I definitely don't have time to write them all. So I think it's possible to be completely sated creatively on small fandoms alone.

Small fandoms do have their charms and rewards!

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Solution: write fic in big fandoms that no one else in the fandom would give a shit about.

Bizarre crossovers! Strange, out-of-the-ordinary AUs! Romance fics between main characters and characters who only appear in one episode! Character studies of characters that everyone else ignores! Just plain ol' weird shit!

[personal profile] solticisekf 2014-06-04 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
haha, these are great ideas!

Eh... now that I've been in small fandoms (or small parts of fandoms) for the past couple of years now, I can definitely see their appeal. They can be so, so much lower on the drama llama.

Small fandoms have fanon too...? Unless you mean you write fics for fandoms that have NO fandom, which I've done, then there's going to be others out there with headcanons that could become fanon. If the fans interact, then there'll probably be some fanon stuff floating around.

The operative words for me here are "no critics". I'm writing a couple of fics at the moment for some miniscule fandoms that aren't even tagged on AO3 (or I had to start the tag myself).

I find it freeing - whatever else, my fic is bound to be the best one out there. However dubious an honour that will be.

However, with the lack of audience, I also am having trouble finishing the stories. It's easier when I know there's a ready audience. As for betas, that's going to be a tough one.

i can relate. it's actually pretty astounding how much faster and less shitty i feel about writing in tiny fandoms than i do in bigger ones. i don't mind crit, especially if it's from people i trust but sometimes i just want to wallow in self-indulgent bullshit without people telling me how unrealistic it is lol

[personal profile] escriboconundedo 2014-06-04 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
i feel like the fandom would have to be very small indeed to not have any critics or fanon at all. seems it would be hard to find a good home for you.

also, it's kind of hard to take you serioisly when you say 'too mainstram'...

(Anonymous) 2014-06-04 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Some people are being a bit judgmental here. You should write where you feel comfortable. Also, you can write original fiction if that ever strikes your fancy?

Older fandoms often have rules about not offering critiques unless requested. They often aren't as busy with new fics or young writers. That can be good or bad. Sometimes they've become rather insular.

Of course, one wouldn't usually join a fandom based on its fans (though sometimes one avoids them for that reason!), but if you do, check carefully into the atmosphere before joining. There are some pretty dysfunctional small fandoms out there, too.
