Some people are being a bit judgmental here. You should write where you feel comfortable. Also, you can write original fiction if that ever strikes your fancy?

Older fandoms often have rules about not offering critiques unless requested. They often aren't as busy with new fics or young writers. That can be good or bad. Sometimes they've become rather insular.

Of course, one wouldn't usually join a fandom based on its fans (though sometimes one avoids them for that reason!), but if you do, check carefully into the atmosphere before joining. There are some pretty dysfunctional small fandoms out there, too.
