+1. Aside from her teeth, book!Brienne never struck me as ugly by modern standards. I half think people in Westeros just think she's ugly b/c she doesn't fit any of the standards for femininity for the series.

She's described as having a massive frame iirc.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
O...kay? I don't consider large people to be unattractive. And certainly, show!Brienne has a larger frame than...80% of the other characters on the show.

She's tall but she still looks like a supermodel.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup. And looks are more important than ability, when it comes to women.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you really that dense? You don't pick Brad Pitt to play a character meant for Steve Buscemi either.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
But no one would complain that that's gross, just that it's bad casting.

Also, if it's something that happens with both genders, then it's not really sexist, is it?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
The difference being that it's okay for male actors to be 'ugly'. Steve Buscemi is a leading man on an HBO show, there's no female equivalent to that. You can have fat male actors like Philip Seymour Hoffman in major roles, not so much with female actresses. (Kathy Bates being an exception perhaps but even then she usually plays weird roles).

I can see how that's a problem. I think the main reason I don't like what OP is saying or what some other people are saying is because I don't think it's helpful to slag off on a woman either way. She's a good actor; she shouldn't be dismissed because she's prettier than the OP would've liked.

your definition of supermodel is strange, earthling.

Heeeeeee.

It's true she's supposedly around the Hound's height, though I don't think she's bigger. However, when she was described as being bigger than Jaime... it was after Jaime had wasted away in jail sitting around in his own filth. So I do think she's tall and muscular, but not some caricature of a manly bodybuilder. Like in that fanart up there. (Not that there's anything wrong with the depiction. It's a great drawing of the bath scene.)

100% agreement.

I am perfectly satisfied with the casting here.

This. Westeros is a judgey asshole place. Kinda like real life, really.
